Another thought on the new Trump NSS: the document itself purports to “reassert the Monroe Doctrine” and outlets are uncritically parroting that

But what the document declares is not what the Monroe Doctrine was

Russia and Qatar are more autocratic than us, but does Nate Silver not know how to read?

In ‘18 and ‘22, host nations did say “please come to our country” bc they wanted tourism to launder their reputation.

The US, on the other hand, currently has a hostile regime towards noncitizens.

Funny thing from the OU “because the Bible tells me so” “scandal” is people saying that this noting the student’s pre-med track and arguing this one assignment’s failing grade will hurt her chances of med school, as if chiropractics wasn’t this girl’s ceiling to begin with.

Says a lot that the one time I’m aware of the U.S. rescuing the purported drug smugglers they had just struck, they repatriated them rather than bring them to trial.

If you don’t have a case against these guys in court, or authority to bring them to trial, why do you have authority to murder them?
I can't stop thinking about the purported drug smugglers being murdered by the US military. The punishment for drug offenses isn't the death penalty. This is just bloodlust and men in suits playing with lives they don't care about. It's truly grotesque and gravely compromises this country.

Anyways, that’s where the National Security Strategy that dropped last night is coming from as it relates to Europe. “We will promote far-right ‘patriots’ to help Europe suffer from ‘civilizational decline.’”
For the past 8 years I’ve noticed that the right has taken nationalism and applied it internationally, rebranding it as “civilizationalism,” a concern for an amorphous “west” with no consistent definition of who makes that up.

#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three democratic appointees, #SCOTUS puts Texas's new House maps back into effect for (and, presumably, through) the 2026 midterms.

The three Democratic appointees, in an opinion by Justice Kagan, dissent.

I'll post the ruling shortly.

what I find deeply idiotic is the idea that a state has a meaningful interest in the integrity of its congressional districts. I don't fucking care what the legislature wanted. the STATE OF TEXAS wouldn't suffer "irreparable harm" if its gerrymander wasn't used. what the fuck are you talking about.

Alito's response literally was that his view is "indisputable," contra the 100+-page opinion (of a Trump appointee no less!).

I know I'm fixating on that paragraph, but it's 🤯.
The dripping contempt the right wing SCOTUS majority holds for district judges is truly a sight to behold every time. When they deign to give actual reasons for their shadow docket holdings, it’s “look at the absolute idiots who keep getting everything wrong!”

An economic policy reporter really should know better than to categorize operational costs of a constitutionally required service as a revenue loss or negative profit margin. You don’t see them do this when talking about the DoD budget or the money required for interstate upkeep.

Nor could that boat, before it was bombed, reach the United States. That’s important because it refutes the laughable claim of “imminence” necessary to wrap the strikes under the auspices of a lawful armed conflict.
I cannot imagine the level of moral bankruptcy to describe the actions of people whose boat has just been hit by a missile from nowhere (this was the FIRST such strike) and who were most likely making a desperate attempt not to drown in the ocean as trying to "stay in the fight."
Q: What did you see in the second strike?

Cotton: "I saw two survivors trying to flip a boat -- loaded with drugs, bound for the United States -- back over, so they could stay in the fight."

More technically-versed people can opine on the practicality of the Golden Dome, but I really think the bigger picture is that this is less of a sincere national security pursuit and more of an attempt to create a slush fund for the new tech companies attempting to graft themselves onto the MIC.
