Chicago could be an amazing city to live car-free but the deference to the privileged makes it more challenging than need be, especially in the winter
It feels that winter and snow in Chicago helps widen existing inequities because those without cars are less able to move around safely on transit and on foot. Mobility justice is hampered with the city management and policies around snow clearance.

Chicago is a winter city & I think residents pride themselves in navigating the brutal winters. As much as the cold and winter is part of our identity, the city itself doesn’t manage winter & snow well. Right now, our sidewalks are intermittently icy w/ many alleys looking like ice rinks.

It hasn't even been twelve hours, but all three of us have been overwhelmed with requests from media for comment and I'm mostly writing this now so they'll leave me alone.
this is such a painful loss. my heart is broken.

"I'm a piece of shit and the state agrees it's not a big deal"
I love when drivers brag about avoiding accountability for their dangerous driving. Maybe they should have learned their lesson from the *two* prior warnings and not driven 90 on Route 1.

The car and oil industries have convinced us that this is normal! School pick-up lines are an environmental and healthcare catastrophe. Drivers circle the loop until they see their kiddo, they exit the loop, then one of the 20+ car drivers idling in the line down the block enters the loop. #Exhaust

This is 100% my biggest nightmare. It is increasingly dangerous to just *walk* around our cities, and our electeds are mostly asleep at the wheel while kids die.

I estimated I was one of 4,000 or so cyclists in Chicago yesterday but maybe that's low if these are the Divvy numbers alone
Shout out to winter Divvy riders who’ve been braving extreme cold across Chicago:

12/13 (low 4°F): 3,242 rides
12/14 (low -1°F): 2,333 rides

On my ride in this morning, it was 10°F but felt like -5°F and people were still out riding. Protected bike lanes on Grand Ave made it possible and safe!

The vast vast majority of ethnic Somalis in Minneapolis are American citizens, having either arrived as refugees in the 1980s and 1990s with the fall of Siad Barre, or been born in America. The number who are undocumented is almost certainly vanishingly small. There's no immigration enforcement here
