New introduction post seeing as we've had a lot more new followers.

Hi, I'm Steve and I'm a beer and brewing historian.
Which basically means I research and write about the societal history of beer from a holistic viewpoint. Every aspect of beer is entwined with every other aspect, and without...

Beersky, what would you class as your must-visit London pubs at the moment? I’ve got a few old favourites and new to me places on the list but please give me your recommendations.

(For the purposes of the trip, ideally located anywhere between and including Finsbury Park and Bermondsey)

Reading a mostly excellent book about effects of diet on blood pressure. Every single point about health effects of diet is carefully footnoted and points to serious research. Until we get to “drinking more than 14 units a week is a well known risk factor.” No footnote. Why would that be, I wonder?

Good morning world!

Another day of speradsheets awaits, the question is: Will there be enough tea?

Your annual reminder that “Blue Monday” is a complete fiction invented by a company that wanted to sell you more holidays.

Enjoy January! It’s quiet and cosy and time for semi-hibernation, reflection and being kind to yourself!

One of the great things about having a lot of free time, is being able to binge telly series you've never seen before. But really should have.

Tonight, starting on 2 Broke Girls for the first time.

Hadn't even seen any clips or anything of this before, but it's really quite good 🤣

I've been getting back into the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series after many years, and the most relatable part is how everyday objects like doors and elevators have been imbued with artificial intelligence and it just makes them obnoxious and frustrating to use and everyone hates it.

What's the time?

It's Beer O'Clock! 🤣

I've got beer festivals on my mind and am not allowing myself anywhere near any marketing for Peterborough Beer Fest 🤣

A few breweries now have asked about having their beers on handpull at Peterborough Beer Fest, so I've spent a bit of time looking at the logistics, practicalities and costs of being able to do it, and I believe we can. For some at least.

Trump just placed a tariff on most of the EU of 10% that will increase to 25% in June unless they agree to sell him Greenland.

This is mad king shit.

The broadcast has been selected for Radio 4’s Pick of the Week on Sunday at 6.15pm presented by Emma Freud. Apparently it’s very rare that Food Programme features on this best of BBC Radio round-up

Telling protesters who are having grenades launched at their faces that they're "taking the bait" is fundamentally not very different than telling someone like me that I shouldn't "provoke" violent randos if I don't want to be gay-bashed or raped, and I think liberals should think on that.

When I take over the country I'm going to ban whistling (along to songs etc) in public.
First offence will incur a Hard Stare and a tut.
Second offence a year in jail.
Third offence tongue cut out and lips cut off.

It's the only way to stop this heinous act.

My old brewery was on this street 🤣
Please support my petition to Manchester city council to get a blue plaque put up at that spot on Temperance Street where a man getting a handjob was captured by a Google street view car.

A handsome volume, as you'd expect from Historic England & @livunipress.bsky.social - lots for general readers, as it clearly demonstrates just how significant & ordinary temperance was across England; essential reading for academic work on temperance & drink too.. @drinkingstudies.bsky.social (1/4)
