A grammar lesson, from our zine launched last week 🧑‍🏫

In its singular use, it can be used to refer to a person (or thing) without the needless trappings of grammatical gender. For example: “I saw someone at the march. They had a sign that said ‘All my homies hate ICE.’” BUT, when it’s in the mood, ‘they’ can switch to a plural meaning, for example: “I saw two women kissing at the march. They had shirts on that said ‘I love it when girls.’” This latest example also illustrates the distinction between grammatical gender and social gender: ‘they’ refers to two women (social gender) but is gender-neutral (grammatical gender). Some novices in gender and language make the mistake of believing that grammatical gender refers to some Real Gender or even... SEX. But all my homies know that’s silly.

A passage, written by Emmie Malone, from the zine Being Trans in Philosophy, Issue #0. It is taken from page 20. It is passage 1/3. It reads: “The bulk of my experience being trans in philosophy happens at one of three levels. Pirst, there are the would-be allies. They would be allies if a crisis were to come, but like the doctor in Benigni's Life is Beautiful, they are simply unable to ever see a crisis as present at hand, to hear you speak plainly and understand what you mean. So much of the experience of being trans in philosophy mirrors daily life as a trans person in this regard. It involves well-meaning cis people encouraging you by saying that the political realities you have just told them have come to pass hopefully won't come to pass. Trans life is the life of Wittgenstein's lions, one's words forever falling deadborn from the mouth. The would-be ally cannot recognize harm, or panic, or dread as they are brought into the world, they can only understand it as a tragedy. The apparent choice we are left with 1s to be understood as a lesson of history or to let our struggle be as wild and unintelligible as lions running free from the zoo.” A passage, written by Emmie Malone, from the zine Being Trans in Philosophy, Issue #0. It is taken from page 20. It is passage 2/3. It reads: “Beyond this is the experience of walking on eggshells. The sad truth is that we must be mindful to manage every interaction. You see, while they would not consciously think the thought or say the words, to many of my colleagues I have functionally not been a person first, but a walking TV news chyron, an invitation for others to think and talk about the ‘transgender issue.’ If you are lucky this conversation will involve you but 1t often does not. If you are very lucky you will get to educate or at least enter into dialogue, but you quickly realize that 1s seldom your role. Instead, you are merely there to sit and nod and look for points of agreement and, perhaps, gentle ways to push them in the right direction as they delineate the precise ways in which your rights and the rights of your community should differ from theirs. That 1s, you are there to launder their opinion on the ‘transgender issue.’ If you do this, you will be rewarded with their approval as ‘one of the good ones’ and they will quickly turn the conversation to the meta level, about how great it 1s when people can talk about ‘this stuff.’ The secret of this conversation, for which you will be punished, is that you are actually one of the bad ones, if not the worst one. Yet, institutional forces, power structures, and professional norms prevent you from responding appropriately as a complete and moral person. If not that then it will be the sober recognition that many of our colleagues are quite visibly only one mismanaged…” A passage, written by Emmie Malone, from the zine Being Trans in Philosophy, Issue #0. It is taken from page 21. It is passage 3/3. It reads: “interaction away from quitting the field to join the much more lucrative professional transphobe circuit. You are always at threat to be the inciting incident in their popular op-ed deta1ling their burgeoning transphobia are. The punishment, of course, is the personal and emotional toll of being ever vigilante in balancing the moral injury of complicity in laundering these views and demeaning your character and, on the other hand, introducing the world to the next great public transphobe and 1ts consequences. Finally, there 1s the fact that academic philosophy does function as the most significant minor league farm system for professional transphobia, that it is seemingly determined to render 1tself the handmaid of this particular political project, and that contemporary analytic philosophy is the academic discipline which has done more to promote the cause of state-sponsored transphobia than any other field in history. What is the APA to a trans man? What is the Dewey Lecture to mean to the trans woman when it means sitting shoulder to shoulder with the brain trust of the current regime's assault on the rights, healthcare, history, and basic dignity of trans people across the country. Being present secures you professional niceties as 1t does then, but in honest I would rather my colleagues just call me a tranny to my face and let me go home to a safe environment with access to healthcare and political recognition. To celebrate the field 1s, plainly, to diminish your self. Of course, it should not be surprising, philosophy has always had its collaborators. But even the Mitläufer of Freiburg was left digging ditches in the end. Accordingly, we might ask, like Cineas did to Pyrrhus, why some in our profession don't just save them themselves the trouble and go dig ditches now instead.”
