Golden-crowned Kinglet (Regulus satrapa), a very small, hyperactive songbird common in North American forests. These birds are among the smallest in North America, weighing only 6 to 8 grams. They are typically found in coniferous trees and have a distinctive black-and-white striped face. The namesake golden or fiery-orange crown patch is often concealed but can be flared when the bird is agitated. Kinglets primarily eat insects, insect eggs, and spiders, constantly moving as they glean food from bark and leaves. They are notably hardy, routinely surviving harsh Canadian winters.

We don’t always see them in the winter, but we have had a few visiting us this year.
Pine Siskins love to hang around pine and spruce trees in the winter, feeding on the seeds in the cones.
This Pine Siskin apparently had to do some digging in the snow to get to the cones!
