Pin it to me, baby!
I'm Daniel, an Omnigamer and amatuer cook who loves to explore new ways of thematic expression in games, especially through the shared experience of food.
My feast content is on hiatus while I explore new options, but you can find me as cohost on @omnigamers.bsky.social
I'm standing behind an arrangement of Lord of the Rings games and memorabilia and a plate of ring shaped pizza pretzels. I'm standing in front of a kallax shelf of games wearing a cooking apron, and holding a wok in front of me. The board game Wok N Roll is inside the wok A berry pie with a large X cut in the top and several cold coins on a table with various components for the board game Forgotten Waters arranged around it. A plate of salmon with a berry compote and grilled carrots, alongside various components for the board game Cascadia.

#3 Alien Resurrection
Ok Whedon's weird empowerment boner aside, that was actually pretty great. A much more pulpy take but impeccably shot and filled with incredible physical props and little weirdos.

Weapon upgrades in JRPGs are largely a matter of number go up but none have ever felt as good as giving Rudo a shotgun.

Kid is still loving Pebble Rock Delivery Service, by far the longest game to hold her attention, and starting to get a good handle on strategy (having won every game so far).

Nomia, which I had the chance to demo at the Vancouver Game Garden is now in early access. It's an incredibly stylish deck-builder tactical game, where you mix and match 2 different heroes. A fascinating mix of Hades and Clair Obscur in how you build your synergies.
Isometric view of a grid based tactical map with 2 heroes and 5 monsters on it. An assortment of cards are shown on the bottom Character selection showing an armored knight called Butterfly on one side, and a woman in a white dress called Seagull on the other.

I've been in a rare mood for word games so blowing the dust off of Cryptmaster for spooky season. It remixes so many different puzzle formats into a strong setting with so many clever ways of forcing you to mix up your tactics.
Screenshot of Cryptmaster, a black and white horned skull with the subtitles 'it's a sort of orb with a messy tail, there are circular designs on one side'. Above is the input for a word _ _ _ _ _ L _

Clearly *something* is in the water with discourse on indie game coverage but the timeline is so fouled I can't track the source of it. But we discuss that topic a little on this week's appetizer in light of Game Pass changes.

I'm stuck on a completely different boss fight right now, having fun but it's not entirely clear what level any battle will be and if something isn't working it's quite time consuming to retrain everyone into different classes.

I get the appeal for those who find TTRPGs intimating but this kind of improvisational story telling tends to gel better when you're building a consistent world together rather than a series of vignettes. The mechanical structure of board games tends to flow better with authored narratives.

Yo, content creators. If you're ever looking for b-roll for classics, hit me up. I certainly don't have every game, but I have a library of footage I've taken from hundreds of games "just in case". Happy to share with attribution. Helpful for top 10s or genre focussed vids.

Indie game coverage is tough because games media has been gutted so the major publishers can control the message via PR-friendly influencers. No freelancer can fix this, obviously, but I can assure I (and other freelancers like me) are excited to cover indie games and pitch like crazy.

More specifically:
boardgamefeast.bsky.social
Thinking more on Game Pass' and how it did lead me to playing indie games I otherwise wouldn't have tried but also to complacency in not seeking out games elsewhere. Ultimately, we mustnt rely on megacorps for discovery of games. Independent media giving time to independent games is vital.
boardgamefeast.bsky.social
Game Pass' enshittification was always inevitable but if they're cranking up the temperature this quickly (an extra $10 a month!) they must be really feeling the squeeze. I've dropped it since the BDS protest and I assure you it's not as vital as it feels.
