Great interview with @cleanvirginia.org Exec Dir @brennangilmore.bsky.social, who does an excellent job explaining “regulatory capture”, where a monopoly utility uses donations to buy the politicians and laws it needs to expand its profits and limit its regulations. From @brandonjarvis.bsky.social

Huge shout out this morning to @brennangilmore.bsky.social & @cleanvirginia.org ! 8 years ago, it seemed impossible to put forth candidates in VA who could remain principled & competitive w/o accepting money from corporate utilities (who then would exert power over laws, decision making, etc).

14 Democrats ask Shannon Taylor to recuse herself from Dominion cases
The signers of the letter, backers of former Del. Jay Jones, Taylor's Democratic rival for attorney general, say the $650,000 Taylor has accepted from Dominion poses "serious ethical concerns."

🚨NEW: A coalition of Virginia lawmakers is calling on Shannon Taylor to explain why she accepted $650,000 from Dominion Energy while running for Attorney General — the largest utility donation in a competitive race in U.S. history.

The conflict of interest is undeniable.
If elected AG, Shannon Taylor should recuse herself from cases involving Dominion and regulated utilities — given the $650K+ they’ve already given her.

Virginians need to know their Attorney General works for the public, not a private company.

Proud to join public servants across Virginia in urging Shannon Taylor to take this pledge before next week’s election.

Attorney General is the People’s Lawyer and a major consumer protector. This should be an easy ethics call.

Looks like Dominion Energy has decided to go “all in” for Shannon Taylor in the Virginia AG race

Jay Jones has an advantage in Hampton Roads which should give him a good base of votes

Taylor needs the money to go on air in the expensive DC media market to have a chance

I always need to remind myself whenever I pay my dominion bill that the money is not only going to fossil fuel projects but massive election contributions and lobbying expenses that I do not support.
Dominion just dumped $375k into AG candidate Shannon Taylor’s campaign while trying to raise electric bills over $21/month.

We just launched a new TV ad to hold her accountable.

Watch it now: youtu.be/C6EoqWb-DGI?...

Because the Attorney General should protect Virginians, not corporate polluters.

What makes me the most annoyed about this is that Taylor doesn’t seem to think there’s anything to the AG’s job except criminal prosecution, so why does Dominion money matter?

The OAG is a largely civil position and the only defense most citizens have against abusive industry.

Gotta love it out here in the Wild West of campaign finances, where the "regulated monopoly" gives boatloads of money to both those writing the laws to regulate them and to those who would take them to court for violating the laws that regulate them. 🤦🏻‍♀️
BREAKING: Dominion dumped $300,000 into Shannon Taylor’s campaign in just six weeks of April and May.

Virginia’s top polluter is her top campaign donor. Virginians should ask why.

AGs are supposed to stand up to corporate interests on behalf of consumers.
