There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

In September, I wrote about Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ezra Klein, why swallowing live frogs is a bad idea, and how context and history can release you from bright-kid syndrome: the illusion that you alone are going to have every answer or fix the world. [5/5]
You don't have to swallow frogs
Klein and Coates show that if you don't know what your core beliefs are, you're going to get played.

Never accept a work meeting until you’ve seen the agenda and know what decisions need to be made. If no decisions need to be made, skip the meeting.

Way to miss the point he unequivocally made: people make clothes cool. He doesn't mean groups. He means a person finds clothes that fit and communicate something intentionally. It's also a grown up way of thinking, so yes, not for everyone.
My point is letting groups define what is cool can not always lead to fashionable trends.

true. that's bc you've allowed your sense of style to be narrowly defined by fashion brands, instead of thinking about it in terms of cultural history. over the course of the 20th century, many groups have dressed well, even if they didn't conform to fashion trends or bourgeois respectability

Let's be clear. The school administration ended the instructor's career. The 18yo doofus was just the latest tool used to push someone towards the sacrificial altar where the institution's courage and integrity were first burned as an offering to facists.
If you’re wondering why your friends in academia are a little on edge right now, it’s because an eighteen-year-old who hasn’t done the reading, doesn’t look at the assignment, and has does no critical thinking skills more complex than “because I think it’s in the Bible” can literally end your career

The University of Oklahoma has removed an instructor who was accused by a student of religious discrimination over a failing grade on a psychology paper in which she cited the Bible and argued that promoting a “belief in multiple genders” was “demonic.” https://cnn.it/4b6g3rd

There Is No Mary Problem in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’
George’s vision of his wife without him is essential to the film, but critics continue to miss its true—and profound—meaning.

Found the actual men in women's bathrooms assaulting women.
ICE agents illegally break into a woman's bathroom in a NY nutrition bar manufacturing plant. "Pull up your pants," says a male agent. The agents only had a warrant to review employer documents. They didn't have a warrant to search for, detain, or arrest anyone there.

i know all words are made up but "malice" is already there for the taking but somehow "malignity" ended up here
To everyone following the Bari Weiss story and struggling with the question of whether this is rank incompetence or malignity: Doesn't matter, because rank incompetence plus arrogance IS malignity, so even if you give her the benefit of the doubt (btw, there's no reason to), that's where you end up.

100% true. I rewatch old movies with an eye towards that "Time Machine" effect of seeing the real NYC. "Taxi Driver", "Fort Apache: The Bronx", "The Warriors" are all terrific examples of what what it was like for my generation growing up in that world.
worth watching a movie set in the 1970s, like THE NICE GUYS, and comparing to a movie made in the 1970s, like DIRTY HARRY

It’s not really a sport, it’s a disgustingly brutal form of exploitation that should be banned.
