Cool new work from Steve’s lab!
Now live! Nearly all human genes contain multiple transcript isoforms - and the genes that predominantly control infection, ISGs, are no different. Using PacBio with analysis help from Yan Guo, Himadri noticed a never-before-seen transcript isoform of ISG15 that potently restricts flu 1/4

With the loss of published paylines it will be harder to quantify changes in grant funding rates for 2026, but this analysis makes clear that paylines will go down substantially across the NIH.
I have been modeling the impact of multi-year funding.

Based on fairly reasonable assumptions, 50% multi-year funding, the number of new and competing awards is anticipated to drop to approximately 6000 compared to 10,000 had there been no multi-year funding above the historical background rate.

The scientific (bureaucratic) uncertainty over what constitutes gain of function research is going to stymie important research into pathogens, just as the US & Canada are poised for a dramatic resurgence of infectious diseases thanks to the ‘wisdom’ of non-scientists who have abandoned reason.
ANOTHER NIH leader resigns—John Beigel—over 'a flu study dustup'

A Beigel supporter within NIH "called the flu study dustup a 'pseudomanufactured concern' that was meant to force him out, so officials could bring in a researcher who has strongly supported Trump"🙄

Unfortunately the drop in ESI funding rates is not paired with changes in funding required to get tenure. It’s not just the next three years of our labs at risk, but the rest of our careers. We are also the cohort that started in the COVID pandemic- it’s been nothing but “unprecedented times”…

Tarrifs are taxes. I know this because I just had to pay UPS $43.24 on a package from France that originally cost $169. That's an extra 25% (and it would have been an extra $12 if I didn't pay the tax in the 90 minutes between getting the bill by email and the package being delivered).
