Strong observational skills will let you draw subjects from life instead of photographs, too, and will help with other art forms like sculpture, etc. Tracing is a dead end
Hot take but don't trace your art, even for studies. A huge part of learning anything about art is learning to observe things, and tracing isn't going to help with that. A lot of artists disagree with this but I think it hinders more than it helps.
