I feel so sick reading this. She dedicated her life to helping her immigrant trans siblings, finally got the medical care she sought her whole life, and then a year later ICE tricked her, kidnapped her and used her postoperative status as a weapon to destroy her health.

Could be wrong, but I imagine the kids spoken to here are white, cis and not at *too* much risk. They can keep their heads down, not criticise the government, avoid protests and expect to basically be fine. Others might not be so fortunate. No reflection in the article on this, though.

This is just openly a huge scam, tricking customers into purchasing something that looks like a book but isn't, and which no one, not even the "author", thinks is worth reading. And this article just presents this as "controversial but you can't argue it isn't successful"
February 8, 2026 at 8:31 PM
This should be the sort of thing that brings down a government. The British press probably won't even cover it. You can kill as many kids as you like as long as they're trans.
One of the wickedest things Wes Streeting has ever done is push politically convenient falsehoods about suicide rates amongst young trans people. We have new data from the National Child Mortality Database that exposes the truth he tried to cover up.
New data shows surge in trans kids’ suicides following healthcare rollbacks | Good Law Project
A freedom of information request by Good Law Project has found that deaths by suicide of trans young people under 18 surged following the withdrawal of gender-affirming healthcare

This sickens me so deeply because anyone who knew young people and their families within the trans community knew this was true. Could viscerally feel the damage that has been done to a whole generation. And the instinct from Labour was not to address the harm – it was to cover it up. Unforgivable.

It's inevitably impactful. I don't usually set out to comment on any specific thing that's going on in my writing, but it still exists within the context of the world we live in. I can't write about a topic or type of character without reference to how those ideas are being discussed currently.
I'm breaking the rule of not bringing up politics, #pretendpanel! Still, I think it's important to think about it in our writing.

Anything I write about trans people is automatically politicised by the cultural context in which it exists. Whether or not I am intentionally directly engaging with the political realities of being trans, they will in some way inform the experience of my characters.
Today is Waitangi Day here in Aotearoa, #pretendpanel, and it gets me thinking about the role of politics in the stories we tell.

Every instance of "AI democratizes the arts, you're classist and ableist and a gatekeeper for trying to stop it" is a slap in the face to the literally centuries of poor, disabled people making art on the margins and a crass lie in service of a machine that strips down and regurgitates dreams

People were always asking "How did Savile get away with it for so long?" and I think part of the answer is found in how Andrew is treated. People with institutional power do not care about CSA even to the *very* basic degree of keeping an infamous pedophile away from children.
Misread this at first and thought it would be an old article about the films. But no Andrew Whatsit-Windsor was allowed on to the HBO show's set.

I get the sense that safeguarding isn't a priority here. It's not "a bit strange" that a pedophile turns up uninvited around kids, it's very alarming!

Shakespeare wasn't the sole writer of Sir Thomas Moore - he was brought in as a kind of script doctor to make it more politically acceptable, since it dealt with recent history and could easily have caused upset. He failed and it was never performed.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

We have enough evidence for UBI in general that this policy should be a given. But the difference is, to understand UBI works is to believe that people are fundamentally good. And a big chunk of society is built around the belief, *must maintain the belief* that people are fundamentally bad.

this was done intentionally - multiple ministers including Willis & Seymour bragged about how many jobs they’d cut in the first 12 months of their government. the reserve bank literally said it wanted unemployment up to control inflation. as with so many other policies this term, it’s social murder
Nothing says we've tuned a corner like unemployment being the worst since 2017. 🙄

All anyone in the cast of this is gonna be doing for the next eight or however many years is justifying to people why it was okay for them to do it. That doesn't seem all that fun to me! Seems to kinda make the whole thing a bit of a slog!

A woman gave a cop a thumbs down (wow, so rude 🙄) so he followed her home, assaulted her, tore her clothing, and tried to force his way into her home. It seems he used his authority as a cop as a bad faith pretence for why he was retaliating to her gesture

But NZ Police says they think it was okay
This is the problem with our police oversight mechanism. Police reject IPCA finding that their officer broke the law and that's the end of the story.

If Police think giving a thumbs down is grounds for a traffic stop, then giving the middle finger to the IPCA should be grounds for prosecution.
Police push back after watchdog slams ‘thumbs down’ stop
The incident occurred on December 22, 2022, after the officer pulled alongside the woman and later signalled her to stop, claiming he believed she may have been impaired by drugs or alcohol.

It’s clear since the Tim Jago ACT President was charged & convicted of multiple counts of child abuse, that the money behind ACT protects Seymour, the Party & astroturf organisations from proper scrutiny in the media. Can you imagine if a Labour Leader had run interference for a paedophile?
