My Sunday Times piece: Sacred cows like the pension triple lock and the long freeze on fuel duty help explain why other taxes are having to go up:

Taxes are going up, and the pension triple lock is one of the reasons

Taxes are going up, and the pension triple lock is one of the reasons
As Rachel Reeves struggles to fix the public finances, sacred cows such as fuel duty and the state pension are cramping the chancellor’s room for manoeuvre

Good point about public sector pensions, and sensible solutions to the current problem. Why doesn’t Rachael Reeves take advise from economist like David Smith and Paul Johnson, and throw Martin Lewis into that mix. First people I would be on the phone to if I got the job.

Excellent article. With a very grim chart.

Why aren’t the government saying anything about the affordability crisis the UK is going through? Too busy waving flags

Great to be back up UCL IOE this afternoon. London really busy, especially around UCL, despite what Trump thinks, London attracts the very best students from all around the world, something we should be proud of 🇬🇧

What counts as "the economy"? How can we factor in unpaid work and everyday life?

A new discussion paper by @ucl.ac.uk's Jonathan Gershuny explores how time-use data can reveal this hidden economy: tinyurl.com/4ev8x5fc

I did look at my provider Essex & Suffolk and they seem to have a contract for life. Absolute madness, and agree, nationalisation is too expensive, so must be a way to change the contracts?
busecon.bsky.social
Why aren’t water companies on franchise contracts, which could be taken back without cost to the government?
busecon.bsky.social
Like rail, should be on a rolling 5 year contract, so when that expires take it back from the private sector

Sensible, joined-up, long term,
strategic thinking. All words that have been absent from UK government economic policy over a number of years

My Times piece: We can learn from the Netherlands on how better to finance infrastructure spending and more house building, without spooking the markets:

It’s time to go Dutch to solve Britain’s housing crisis

Another look at global monopolies ripping off customers and suppliers.
I am amazed that central banks and governments are not more vocal on this, especially in the UK where we have rampant food inflation. A conspiracy of silence?

Thats more like it. True British grit, well done. I am average at pub quizzes tbf. I know a lot about certain types of music, football and Economics! So useless on a lot of general knowledge

Amazing how little Rachael Reeves has said or done anything about this. Will be there undoing at the next election.

Water companies have consistently asked for above inflation price rises to pay for investment and it rarely gets declined. Where has that money gone? 🤔 #EconSky open.spotify.com/episode/2Lkk...
