Somebody on here quipped earlier that we live in precedented times. It hit home with me.

In 2003 I watched US troops roll in to the oil rich Iraqi city of Kirkuk and roll straight out the other side to take up defensive positions around the oil refinery.

As is fairly obvious, I love reading, and I'm happy that my son does too. But I don't always love the way we talk about child literacy, nor where the UK media tends to place the blame for those rates' recent, and worrying, fall.

Watching this Robin Williams documentary really underlines the fact that cocaine is only fun if you're the one doing it.

Anyone still using the word "distraction" at this point is, not to put too fine a point in it, a fucking moron.

They are not doing one thing to distract from another thing.

They are doing all the things.
Never has a President wagged a dog harder than Trump and MAGA now.

To distract from Epstein, the explosion of health and homeowners insurance costs, and the tariffs that are decimating small businesses, Trump is plunging this country into a war and using our soldiers as pawns.

And now, a word from Airstrip One...
Keir Starmer: "I constantly remind myself that 24/7 our defence, our security & our intelligent relationship with the US matters probably more than any other relationship we've got in the world and it would not be in our national interest to weaken that in any way"

The good news about an explicitly "Might Makes Right" foreign policy, where we do whatever we want to other countries because we can, is it will benefit us without causing blowback

Ads for Hamnet saying "In cinemas January 9: book tickets now" are warming the cockles. I'm no cinephile myself and don't go often, but, presenting your film as a fucking *film* that people should actively go and watch and not some algo slop content is a Good Thing. I will book tickets and go.

I want to remind everyone that the US has sanctioned members of the International Criminal Court for going through a formal legal process to identify international leaders who engaged in war crimes, making them vulnerable to arrest.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Why wasn't congressional authorization necessary?

RUBIO: It wasn't necessary because this was not an invasion. We didn't occupy a country. This was an arrest operation.

In Ireland we would call someone like Chuck Schumer "a waste of good skin".

The likes of UvdL and KK (and our own non-entity Helen McEntee) burble about "International law" but in fact stand forsquare against it; upholding the US's unilateral actions in "arresting" a foreign head of state but undermining the ICC's authority.
3/ Maduro is a monster, but the U.S. action is also unravelling protections for Heads of State and Foreign Ministers around the world.

Just recently the United States government made this point on the "personal inviolability" of such foreign officials from criminal arrest.⤵️

The maddest thing about Irish politics is how the people in power really insist they're not. "We should increase defence spending!" Sure who would you talk to about that?

The craven genocidal EU sycophants like Merkel, Kallas, and von der Leyen who have fought for a mostly International law based system that only excludes certain people from having rights will not suffer consequences themselves, but they will live to see the logical conclusion of their work.
