aside from work stuff, i mostly use social media to look at funny videos of dogs and subreddits about nail polish. you would not BELIEVE what the lacqueristas are getting up to over there, the anti-ICE nail art is flooding the feed.
this is what the nail girlies are up to

Bari Weiss said she would personally book an interview with someone like Kristi Noem or Tom Homan, two sources said. So "60 Minutes" producers flew to DC from New York, and Alfonsi flew in from Texas. But the promised interview did not materialize. Everyone went home empty-handed. Full story here:

Nuanced take: I think it's really important to give *normal citizens* who supported Trump and off-ramp and *professional writers, pundits and politicians* who supported Trump should have to wear it like a scarlet letter for the rest of their lives
This is aggravating, because on the one hand I think it's really important to give fascists an off-ramp and positive reinforcement when they use it...

...on the other hand, FUCK that guy, in particular.

He refers to himself as “edgy” and has before been proud he’s “provocative.”

The scholar’s job is not to be edgy or provocative. Our job is to search for truth and critique the legal world we live in.

Tenure protects us to have bold claims, but our job isn’t to just drop bombs for the sake of it.

I want to address my friend Ilan who says here that he has been subject to “a lot of hate” from academics who “should know better” and haven’t respected the “academic enterprise.”

I don’t dislike Ilan. I also think his paper is fundamentally wrong and not scholarly.

The first thing Virginia Spanberger did after being sworn in as Governor of Virginia was repeal Youngkin’s executive order requiring state and local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE.

This is the kind of leadership Democratic governors nationwide should be emulating.

Minor league football growing pains will persist. Huge gambling scandal when? Payroll cap scandal when?
If the College Football Playoff remains at 12 teams next year, it’ll guarantee spots for the Power 4 champs, one G5 champ and a spot for Notre Dame if the Irish are ranked in the top 12, the CFP confirms.

All the conferences + ND agreed to that in an MOU almost two years ago.

13 ICE arrests were made at the Meta center site in north Louisiana this morning (Jan. 18).

The arrests were made after traffic stops by the Richland Parish Sherriff’s Office. The sheriff says the 13 arrestees had no Lawful residence in the U.S. and none of them had a Louisiana drivers license.

Someone told me that if there are tanks in the streets people won't vote. But we see in Minneapolis right now that that's not the case. There are militarized troops in the streets right now, shooting people dead, and thousands are out confronting them, protecting their neighbors.

Bluesky runs an appview.
Blacksky runs an appview.

A complete appview is a several terabytes sized database of the >18 billion follows, likes and posts of all bsky users, ever and forever.

To run a different appview is to make a fork in bsky’s timeline.

One has new posts from Łink.
One doesn’t.

You know, many of us said the post 9/11 War on Terror measures were Orwellian bullshit at the time, from DHS to ICE. The Patriot Act was chilling as well.

Some of us objected vociferously. Perhaps we didn't have the mics or the power, but we remember 2001-2005 as a terrible time in this country.

If he'd been savvy and not a moral coward, Bill Cassidy would be celebrated tonight as the guy who stood up to Trump and saved public health, and sacrificed his Senate seat to do the right thing. But, instead, he'll just be remembered as a cowardly loser with a lot of blood on his hands.

Please listen to the audio of this Dokoupil-Leavitt exchange (halfway into the story, free link below) so you can hear the way he says, "Yeah, we're doing it, yeah."

He sounds like an Olive Garden waiter who was just asked to bring another bowl of breadsticks.

My Colorado MAGA focus group was devastated that a bill to bring clean drinking water to their community was vetoed by Donald Trump out of pure political pettiness. None were sure how this could be resolved, but all agreed it starts with giving Trump a third term.

In this Ohio town, it was tradition: Arrive home from the travel agency, well-done ribeye, and then down to the wood-paneled basement to fire up the cathode ray TV and pretend you're drinking whiskey with CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil. But now the woke mob wants to take that all away.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.
