If you've bounced off MOBY DICK, I beg you to read some of Melville's short stories. I swear, if teachers gave kids "Bartleby" instead of MB to read, they'd get what the fuss is all about.

It's easier to relate to a man who refuses to work than a man obsessed with killing a whale.
You've inspired me to finally order a copy of Melville's complete short works.

Herman Melville on moderates, all the way back in 1857:

Saw a fantastic Melville quote that inspired me to post about "Benito Cereno" but someone beat me to it in the replies.

The short story blew me away (much like "Bartelby the Scrivener") and completely reframed my understanding of Melville.
nowhere near enough are forced to read Melville's "Benito Cereno" - an almost Star Trek-style story of a slave rebellion - ending with a disdainful look at Americans who never look deeply at the world or into themselves

I really took my time and just appreciated the hell out of reading this book. It might be my all-time favorite series.

You mean all of this time I've been negotiating with Thad and Bo Warner at Denny's this week, they were offering a deal to Netflix?

I made some soft-boiled peanuts. Not as good as buying it from an old couple on the side of the road on a warm June day in Georgia, but close enough.

I was looking through my high school American History book and stumbled on this.

It's rare to know the actual time and place of the last time you looked at a specific page in a book.

Thanks, past me.

(Luter refers to Mrs. Luter. She was one of my favorite teachers!)

Everyone talks about inflation, but I feel bad about the younger generation who have to settle for 67 instead of 69.

Writers! I'm not sure who needs to hear this, but I've been selling a lot more of my own books since I posted them on Vinted — autographed and/or doodled copies on request. A lot more engagement than I've been getting anywhere else.

I agree that ROGUE ONE isn't perfect, but I've probably watched the last 45 minutes of this movie more than any other SW movie.
rogue one is bad folks. i have believed this since i saw it in theaters and no subsequent rewatch has changed my mind. basically a chop job until the final sequence, which is good (for star wars)

I've shared this quote before but I'll share it again, as it's one I've been thinking about a lot as I've watched how our oligarchs have been behaving over the past few months.

I’d say Hard Boiled. Either way, Chow Yun Fat was simply the coolest person in the world at the time.
chow yun fat in A BETTER TOMORROW is the coolest a dude has ever looked on film

This post is a good excuse to remind everyone to read an Achebe book as soon as you can.
I do sort of prefer the alternative iteration of this: “Let no one be fooled by the fact that we may write in English, for we intend to do unspeakable things with it.” ― Chinua Achebe.
“Let no one be fooled by the fact that we may write in English, for we intend to do unheard of things with it.” ― Chinua Achebe.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.
