Gamer and game modder; I've put way too many hours into Paradox Interactive games. I'm online in most places with this username.
Yet another in the "Everything is Gender".

As Ellie notes, a game can be right-coded in its themes and gameplay, but if there is a non-cishet-white male lead (or even just major non-romance character), it's almost automatically considered left-coded.
was talking in a Discord about the political valences of video games, and observed that at least in the fandoms I was broadly part of, for the past 20 years "what are the politics of this game" has in practice reduced to "what are the gender politics of this game" and literally nothing else

“Let us be clear: we want the power of the state. We wish to hold the criminals of the regime accountable. We wish to seize back the public funds looted by Trump and his cronies. We wish to undo the damage he has done to the government. More than any of that we wish to rebuild.”
From Powerlessness to Power
We will not achieve any of our ultimate goals without exercising state power, and the most effective way to take state power is through nonviolent but confrontational resistance.

Whiteness is defined by who is excluded, so any heritage can become the "other" (yes, that one, too) as is convenient for white supremacists.

I am supremely disappointed by this. Readers don't want this. Librarians don't want this. Libby either doesn't know their audience or doesn't care. Either way, it's not worth me keeping installed.

yeah lot of very smart people just doing pareidolia rn

It’s a form of pareidolia, I think; people have a very hard time with the absolute void at the center of what’s happening, and so the pattern matching wetware, with literally no guidelines, goes ballistic.

mate, what are you explaining? “Kids, this is Mr Jay, would you like to wave or fistbump or shake hands?”

what is there to explain beyond “here’s a person”

Chatbots are perfect examples of the broken clock metaphor, except that each time you look at it, the hands have moved randomly, and sometimes to impossible positions.

Devereaux describes how we are in an in-between moment: of autocracy and fascism, not approaching, but present, not completed, but in progress.

Our challenge is to meet the moment and not shy from it, to not pretend that we can wait for someone else to meet it. Action and inaction are both choices.
I found this exchange, at ~ 55 mins in (youtu.be/m7X0t-MGnUU?...) in the Dispatch Pod telling - how it captures the different vibes I get from center and center-right friends.

In particular, Kevin Williamson's declaration, "we're not waiting for the emergency to get here, the emergency is here."

I looked at some comments, and it really is a lot of cut and paste, all claiming fraud and illegal voting, a vanishingly small problem here in the USA.

I added my own handcrafted comment because voting is important to me and I believe it is important to make voting easy for all eligible citizens.
You may not think this is a big deal, but the commenters who are cut & pasting in language to add burdens to millions of voters think it's a big deal.

everyone would agree that if you believe in what is right, it doesn't matter if it's controversial. i would go a step further and say: you should not even concede to the *idea* that what you believe is controversial.

trans rights is only controversial if you act like it's controversial.

When someone designs/describes their "ideal society", it often comes with the assumption that they would be at the top.

Instead, we should do so with the assumption we would be at the bottom.
When you could code silly quizzes on Facebook, it was FULL of "what would you be in medieval times?!" etc.

I made one that nearly always answered "died as a child", "died in childbirth", "lived and died as a servant"

People got SUPER mad with it.

Everyone assumes they'll be at the top of the tree
The subtext of ‘we should be more like Dubai’, beyond the obvious racism, is ‘I should have a servant’.

One of the challenges in trying to write something about Hegseth's speech at The Quantico Disgrace is you have to listen to the whole speech but it is very difficult to listen so much and not have the style of speech bleed into your writing and you *really* don't want to write like Hegseth talks.

An important lesson to learn, and one that seems less known than it should be.

Sometimes in a contest, the other side was just better or luckier or started from insurmountable advantage.
this is a lesson that is omnipresent in pop culture and yet lost on a subset of centrist pundits
