Inktober Day 10: Sweep

Poor squirrel caught in a flood 😨

When I read "Earth's Children" series, there were multiple mentions of floods at the beginning of spring due to a mix of snowmelt and rain. So, it was the first thing I thought of for the prompt.

On Monday, Yacht Club Games delayed the much-anticipated upcoming game Mina the Hollower.

On Tuesday, I visited their studio and saw the game. It made for a rare glimpse at why a video game gets delayed and what "polish" actually means.

This week's column:

Why 'Mina the Hollower' Was Delayed
Yacht Club Games hasn't given a new release date, but the delay shouldn’t be more than a few months

One of the most fun things about Taskmaster is giving myself a day to stew on how I'd handle a given task and then pretend that, yes, that is indeed how I would handle a tricky puzzle under the pressure of time

In Yoshi's Island, a cave background sparkles, but only when Yoshi moves. This is achieved in an inventive way by making many 1-pixel "pinholes" in the background through which a field of stars is visible. The parallax motion shows the stars intermittently, creating sparkles.

I hate having a pen. At least when they're free roaming, they can't emotionally manipulate me by pouting between the bars like they're innocent little prisoners...(See below)

A man stares out over the fertile olive groves of Gaza, ca. 1911.

One of 125 photographs of life in Palestine before the British Mandate, ca. 1896–1919, we gathered from the collections of @librarycongress.bsky.social and others: publicdomainreview.org/collection/p...
A stereoscopic photograph showing a man in traditional dress standing among prickly pear cacti on a hillside, overlooking the cultivated fields and scattered trees of Gaza, Palestine. The landscape stretches into the distance with the town visible on the horizon. Published by Underwood & Underwood around the early 20th century.

Quick #FossilFriday #paleoart post: a 2025 redo of my 2019 take on the giant #deer Megaloceros. Palaeolithic art captures some aspects of Megaloceros appearance but the details are not unambiguous: when is a line across a body a stripe, when is it a boundary between colour regions?
Three Megaloceros, a stag, doe and fawn, in front of an ice age landscape, painted in 2025. The bodies of the adults have large blocks of colour, without prominent stripes. Three Megaloceros, a stag, doe and fawn, in front of an ice age landscape, painted in 2019. The body of the stag has a dark stripe extending from the shoulder to the thigh.

Like, look at these fucking wood shavings. Really treat yourself to a solid 10 count looking at these panels and letting your eyes look ONLY at the wood shavings, setting aside the character actions and the dialog and the cat on the one guy's shoulder. Just Salieri-seethe and look at those shavings.
Two panels of Ranma 1/2 where Ranma has freaked out from cats and turned all the wood around him into wood shavings.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I thought this was viral marketing for a new Resident Evil, but no it's a real third-party nootropics wholesaler running with the Umbrella branding.

In Super Smash Bros., the skeletons visible when characters are hurt by electric attacks are not tied to specific animations, and instead are a form that can be toggled on and off at any time, including in cutscenes. Below are excerpts of the game's intro, with skeletons.
