Astrocytic cannabinoid receptor 1 promotes resilience by dampening stress-induced blood–brain barrier alterations - Nature Neuroscience
The mechanisms of neurovascular adaptations underlying stress resilience remain unclear. Here the authors show that the astrocytic endocannabinoid system modulates the blood–brain barrier changes duri...

New lab paper drop, this one has been a long time coming! Driven by Rob Aukema (now a postdoc with Kerry Ressler) this paper in Science Advances answered the lingering question of what role the amygdala plays in stress-induced neuroendocrine responses.

A network of basolateral amygdala projection neurons contributes to stress-induced activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis
A network of basolateral amygdala neurons, but not singular projections, contributes to the neuroendocrine response to stress.

~10 years ago few months after I joined @scottrussophd.bsky.social lab I ran a 🧪 qPCR for Cldn5, a marker of 🩸 blood-brain 🧠 barrier integrity, after social stress

I never imagined it would have such an impact 1000 citations 🤯

Never looked back since then 🤓 and how is my lab 7 years old already 😱

We are grieving our friend and brilliant colleague Natalia Duque-Wilckens. A creative scientist, artist, caring mentor, and force for change. Words can’t describe the impact she had on lives at UC Davis, MSU, NC State and beyond. I feel lucky to have known her and wish her time didn’t end so soon

Excited to have my piece on perimenopause published @thetransmitter.bsky.social

"Perimenopause: An important—and understudied—transition for the brain"

We need more studies & better education -we need this to be mainstream- knowledge is power! #WomensHealth

Perimenopause: An understudied transition for the brain
We know little about the mechanisms underlying well-known perimenopause symptoms in the brain. More research—in animals and humans—is essential.

Came back from a fantastic 2-week family trip in London 🇬🇧 and Dublin 🇮🇪 yesterday 🤩

So many cool buildings, museums, history, but I have to admit that Stonehenge was my favorite along with the Guinness brewery 🍻 (and some baby Guinness in a rock bar to finish the trip 😉)

Happy to share our new preprint on BBB mechanobiology on bioRxiv:

We describe an exciting new link between tight junctions and cell-matrix adhesions during BBB maturation and in epileptic BBB dysfunction.
Endothelial tight junctions and cell-matrix adhesions reciprocally control blood-brain barrier integrity
Brain endothelial cells (ECs) rely on mechanical cues to provide a physical barrier that protects the brain. Yet how ECs integrate forces to establish and maintain the blood-brain barrier (BBB) remain...
