I was lucky enough to be interviewed by #webperf community icon @henrihelvetica.bsky.social at #PerfNow 2024.
What a whirlwind conference, it's always energizing to be around this many people interested in beating back the tide of webpage bloat & inaccessible sites

Here's your friendly reminder that CSS selectors are global and evaluated RTL, so if you have selectors that are very broad like `.container > div` you might be impacting performance in a measurable way 🙈

this is truly a perfect distillation of the AI industry's ever-more-monumental public relations problem
Every single time I try to adjust my priors and give 'AI' the benefit of the doubt, something else happens which shows everyone who is pushing this is doing so with reckless disregard for the potential harms or fully cognizant of what they're breaking.

We could talk about whether we got the "good cyberpunk" but what's important I think is a good 50 years of film and comics were trying really, really hard to make you think about this exact sort of image, and to internalize that if you saw this sort of image you should have an intense reaction to it
Every Stephen Miller tantrum and DHS recruitment ad speaks in these existential terms about "defending your culture" to elide the fact that they need people with the courage to wear a mask while interrogating a sixth grader

I've been running an indie games studio for 15 years now, and it felt like a good time to boil down what I've learned into 4 pieces of advice:

I hope it's of use, not least because goddamn I forgot how long blog posts take to write.

The viewers are encouraged to take pieces of candy away, symbolically performing a sacrament of partaking of the body, and symbolically watching his partner waste away to nothing.

It is such a poignant and powerful piece

My contribution to this years Web Performance Calendar is all about Third Parties and Single Points of Failure (SPOF). Based on @httparchive.org data I found that 67% of websites have at least 1 render blocking third party - and quite a few of them are SPOF risks!

I don't know what to say about this garbage vote to criminalize gender affirming care btw. Been trying to find the words. I hear so many friends in sadness and fear today but of what use is "I hear you"? Not much I fear. To live through this moment sucks ass (negative). We must find a way through

I understand that a lot of folks have been misled by fear-mongering and powerful regressive voices but it’s still astonishing to me that so many have fallen for the idea that oppressively policing other people’s gender identity and expression could in any way be part of an enlightened future.
