As a group, District Judges (from across the ideological spectrum!) performing as well as just about anyone right now in defending democratic liberty.

unlike the rest of these folks (and unlike appellate judges and supreme court justices), the job of a district judge is essentially to see what's in front of them
chrislhayes.bsky.social
It's very striking how clearly they seem to see what's right in front of their faces in way that so many others -- law firm partners, university presidents, members of congress, and on and on -- refuse to.

This shit is crazy because they're just straight up on video hitting a car that was blocked in the street. The extent as to which DHS now just brazenly puts out lies is utterly obscene.

UPDATE: In emailed statement to me / @reason.com, DHS alleges that WGN-TV producer Debbie Brockman "threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer."
Screencap of email from DHS public affairs: Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin:

“U.S. Border Patrol was conducting immigration enforcement operations and when several violent agitators used their vehicles to block in agents in an effort to impede and assault federal officers. In fear of public safety and of law enforcement, officers used their service vehicle to strike a suspect’s vehicle and create an opening. As agents were driving, Deborah Brockman, a U.S. citizen, threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer.

“This incident is not isolated and reflects a growing and dangerous trend of illegal aliens violently resisting arrest and agitators and criminals ramming cars into our law enforcement officers. These attacks highlight the dangers our law enforcement officers face daily—all while receiving no pay thanks to the Democrats’ government shutdown.”

this is correct. and while you would get a nontrivial one off sum from a billionaire tax (not enough for a welfare state, but a lot), the ongoing point of that tax would be prevent billionaires from existing

This is good, from Hakeem Jeffries. More of this please, in every conceivable forum:

I've said it before, but it's remarkable how quickly the feds have managed to piss away the seemingly ironclad presumption of candor & credibility they enjoyed with federal judges.

They've lied so shamelessly, flagrantly, & frequently that judges have decided not to be played for fools any more.

U.S. District Judge April Perry says it comes down to a "credibility determination."

"I simply cannot credit [the Trump administration's] declarations to the extent they contradict state and local law enforcement. … DHS' perception of events are simply unreliable."

#BREAKING A federal judge say she will grant "in part" a request by the state of Illinois for a temporary restraining order against the deployment of National Guard troops into the state.

U.S. District Judge April Perry is still ruling and has not outlined the details of her order.

Donald Trump is not a king — and his administration is not above the law.

Today, the court confirmed what we all know: there is no credible evidence of a rebellion in the state of Illinois.

And no place for the National Guard in the streets of American cities like Chicago.

there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

That's honestly a damn good question and I literally have no clue what would allow the soil to maintain equilibrium without soy to rotate with.

I also think it's something that you are honestly giving more thought than anyone involved in the reckless decision to ruin our biggest market.

Be nice if any single national Democrat promised to hold these fuckwads accountable for malicious prosecution should the wheel ever turn around.

But, whatever. Everybody who opposes Trump will just have to weather this bullshit.

Bob's ashes, my parents ashes, my grandparents ashes, all of them are spread across Hook Farms. I don't even know that they'll still be farming, even WITH all their inherited equipment and minimum exposure (AFAIK, it's been a minute) to the soy bean crash. Feed corn is basically guaranteed money.
justingwallace.bsky.social
Bob Hook Farms, which my grandfather worked at for something like 30 years each harvest, specialized in feed corn and soy. Bob complained, ENDLESSLY, before his death that if he hadn't been lucky enough to inherit his equipment he wouldn't be able to grow a damn thing. His descriptions were colorful

Trump literally murdered almost the entire soybean market. We consume a vanishingly small percent of soybeans domestically. It's not even remotely enough to sustain the vast quantities that were already in the dirt when we nuked the Chinese market from orbit.
justingwallace.bsky.social
I think the farmer thing is still not sinking in for a lot of people that didn't grow up around it.

Farming is already an extremely hard market to break into. Most new equipment, which you must sign away your rights to maintain on your own, cost upwards of 1.5 to 2 million dollars. Each.

farmers are probably generationally fucked. medicaid recipients are fucked barring some fix in the next budget round. rural health care systems are toast. employment is looking *very* wobbly.

We're gonna shed entire generations of farmers because of how completely we burned markets to the ground. Topeka was already an unkempt ghost-town. Can't even imagine what'll be like when they start losing some of the bigger farms.

I feel like a broken record, but I have to keep saying it over and over again: a farmer bailout won’t do much of anything because the market is gone. There will be no incentive to plant next year.

The bailout will help payoff farmer debt to the banks. That’s all.

This eats at me, because I was always pretty bad at text / internet interactions, and now they are basically the *only* interactions.

It really does give me whiplash to contemplate how fast our society went from “the Internet isn’t the real world and isn’t that important” to “the Internet is the only real thing that is important.”

The indictment may relate to mortgage documents James co-signed to help her niece secure a loan for a property in Virginia.

This @mollyroberts.bsky.social piece explains why it appears to be a pathetically weak case.
