There's a good chance you didn't watch a minute of the Flyers game given the Phillies and Eagles games also being on.

Luckily, I've got you covered with my in-depth 10 Observations breakdown of the 2-1 loss to Florida. It really wasn't all bad for them:

10 observations: Led by Cates line and Vladar, Flyers battle hard but ultimately fall to Panthers - PHLY Sports
Like the Phillies, the Flyers fell 2-1 to the defending champs on Thursday night. Unlike the Phillies, they can leave the building with their heads held high.

Oh man, Travis Konecny just came thiiiiiis close to tying the game, but couldn't bury it at the far post. Great passing sequence with Zegras and Tippett to get it to him. Zegras is finally starting to pop in the third with the puck.

Panthers score from distance, Marchand rips one top corner. I don't think that changed direction, but Deslauriers did step right in from of Marchand as he took the shot, so it's possible. At the very least, it was an unexpected screen. 2-1 Panthers.

At 5v5 (per Natural Stat Trick):

12-8 PHI in normal scoring chances
7-3 PHI in HD chances
1.48 - 0.87 in expected goals

The Panthers' big shot advantage is pretty much entirely via their 4 PPs.

1-1 after 40 minutes. Noah Cates scored the Flyers' first goal of the season, gobbling up a Tyson Foerster rebound and popping it over Sergei Bobrovsky.

Flyers have gotten outshot by a lot (25-15), but at 5v5, they're hanging right with Florida. Just need to avoid penalties.

Flyers tie it up! Noah Cates bats in a rebound right off a faceoff that Bobrovsky could handle and it's 1-1. Both Philly games with the same score again.

Jeez, now Dvorak takes a penalty in the neutral zone and the Panthers are right back on the PP. Two straight sloppy n-zone penalties from Zegras and Dvorak.

Panthers score on the rush with the PP winding down. Lundell from the slot. 1-0 Panthers.

The Nick Castellanos Experience
baumann.bsky.social
Nick Castellanos has looked like the worst baseball player I've ever seen this series, apart from two enormously clutch doubles

Get this: Travis Sanheim skated for 10:17 minutes in the first period. Literally over half the period.

Yep, they're gonna lean heavy on him with York and Risto out.

0-0 after 20 minutes of play here in Florida. Apparently all Philadelphia teams (and their opponents...?) are allergic to points today. Pretty tight period. Vladar was the standout for the Flyers.
charlieoconn.bsky.social
Vladar just had to face a Panthers shot with no mask on, because the officials didn't notice and blow the play dead after his mask came off. Luckily, he's fine, but that's scary.

Really strong shift there by Bobby Brink. Making things happen in the offensive with his hands and vision.

And the penalty is already over. Rodrigues takes a penalty of his own, and we've got 4v4 hockey.

Michkov kicks off his second NHL season with a penalty 44 seconds in.

Bust!!!!

No shock and well deserved -- looks like Travis Sanheim will take over the A that was vacated when Scott Laughton got traded last season.

Lines and pairs in warmups:

Dvorak - Couturier - Michkov
Tippett - Zegras - Konecny
Foerster - Cates - Brink
Deslauriers - Abols - Hathaway

Seeler - Sanheim
Ginning - Drysdale
Zamula - Juulsen

Vladar

That doesn't mean York will play Monday. But he could. I wasn't sure if that was even an option once he was placed on IR.
charlieoconn.bsky.social
One good piece of Flyers injury news: Cam York was placed on IR, but the seven-day clock doesn't have to start on Day 1 of the reg season (Tuesday). It can be backdated to Sunday.

Which means York is eligible to come off IR before Monday's home opener.
charlieoconn.bsky.social
I doubt it, because Gilbert wasn't really shuffling in.
mathhappens51.bsky.social
Any chance shuffle is for a possible 11/7 combo?
charlieoconn.bsky.social
Did it reflect an internal belief that Vladar was the better goalie in camp?

"Well, Vladdy had a good... I thought they both had good camps. I think Vladdy did a nice job, and that's why we decided to go with him."
charlieoconn.bsky.social
Tocchet on why Vladar gets the Game 1 start over Ersson: "Well, Sam could have played. It's just that you have to pick a goalie. So we decided to go Vladar, and then we'll go from there."
charlieoconn.bsky.social
Vladar is the first goalie off the ice, which usually is a sign of who is getting the start. But with a new coach, I'll reserve final judgment on the starter for tonight until Tocchet officially says so.
