This paragon of evil being an aging, flashy, "tacky" woman is fascinating to me, but not for the reasons I assume Cregger intended. I will be so curious how this ages and how his future films do but I remain on the fence about watching it!

and I don't think Cregger's commentary was strong/believable enough to pass off the "men/society are the real monsters" schtick. It felt (to me) like a fox in the hen house. And seeing the antagonist of Weapons has only reinforced that for me. I just keep thinking "oh, so you HATE hate women."

In that it strikes me in Cregger's work (I think this is present in Aster's too!) that he deep down views women as monstrous. Just as AJ/Keith/Frank can't be separated because of their participation in masculine hegemony...so too did Tess come to have more in common with the monster than not.

tbh I am just not interested in Aster's work. Within the horror genre or without. I find him boring and I feel similarly about Cregger's work. Now, I have not yet SEEN Weapons so that is a huge caveat! But Barbarian left such a sour taste in my mouth I've been really hesitant. Between the lazy

& perhaps me being generally a snob (don't get me wrong, I still like PLENTY of slop) has made me averse to getting my expectations high over hyped movies because they inevitably can't possibly live up to the hype. I would much rather know/hear nothing or hear from one friend I trust about a movie.

OK I read this half asleep last night & cooked on it :') My biggest nitpick with a lot of modern horror is a lack of suspense and really just an overall lack of STRONG writing. A strong screenplay can cover a lot of sins. & idk I find this more often missing than not (even beyond the horror genre!)

as someone who has yet to see it, all the people I normally trust except one LOVED it. the person who didn’t HATED it. I’m an outlier who really disliked Barbarian’s hamfistedness (I know directors can grow!) and am FASCinated by those who disliked it
