I think he's actually malicious. I think his decision to live in France but write in and about America is incredibly revealing. If he thought these people weren't a threat, he would live alongside them. He doesn't do that.
the sophisticated response to this is that people like TCW do not believe conservatives actually exist because they live in an impenetrable social bubble. the less sophisticated response is that those people are genuinely stupid.
