I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.

Some bad news. The great film and culture writer Nathan Rabin was in a serious car accident. He is expected to recover, but he has a rough path ahead. Now is a great time to buy his new book (I just did, looks cool!) - a thorough investigation of movies about movies.

I joined @pbsnews.org to talk about There Is No Place for Us and the staggering rise of the "working homeless":

One of the most enlightening and humane/humanistic books I read this past year.
Please pick it up for yourself or friends

Miller is so detached from his own history and its moral import, that he is restaging the racism exhibited against ostjuden during 1920s Germany
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

I simply do not understand how this squares with RFK Jr.’s obsession with “healthy” food.
But, on the other hand, his main “successes“ have been getting real sugar in processed food. I guess it perfectly squares with cancelling funding for nutritious school meals.

This kind of credulous platforming and lack of critical engagement is what makes sites like Drop Site dangerous. They do good reporting, but its lack of a coherent, ethical, left editorial perspective leads to them passively endorsing racists and fascists.
See below.
Tucker Carlson describes Israeli PM Netanyahu as Western civilization’s “main enemy.”

He says Zionism and other forms of tribalism are “an attack on Western civilization.”

We had an incredible Streetcar Summit on Sunday! Thank you to the over 200 people who joined us to share their experiences riding the streetcar and what needs to be done to improve the system.

This is just the beginning! Stay tuned for our push for the world-class streetcar system we deserve 🚋✨

It's incorrect to compare Lina Khan & Trump, as both seeking to increase the executive's power.
Trump wants to exercise powers the executive does not have. Khan wants to exercise powers that have been created by the Legislature and conferred to the executive.
The latter coheres with the rule of law.

This is really smart
I've seen this go by a few times on TikTok now and I have to say, I love this idea. We need a way to convince people to keep running even if they don't win, maybe building the loss into it as a troll move is the secret.

To sharpen the point: no one was a more dogged supporter of the prevailing Dem nominee on the campaign trail than Bernie Sanders
This is worse than the worst thing ever attributed to any “Bernie Bro”. The Democratic leader literally refusing to say WHETHER HE VOTED FOR THE DEMOCRAT.
this shit right here is wrecker shit, as much as wrecker shit as any online leftist has done, if not more so. no wonder so many people are repulsed by anyone (rightly) saying 'vote blue no matter who', the most powerful elected Dem in the nation won't do it! it undermines the whole coalition! jfc

Something undiscussed in the fracas is the fact that a lot of Mamdani's most striking creative collaborators (who help craft his striking visual style and inspiring words) are both Jewish
Everyone should (rightly) laud this speech and the courage to give it but I hope people don't forget this isn't *just* Zohran Mamdani, it's also his writer, Julian Gerson, and Mamdani's creative director, Andrew B. Epstein.
The dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated the same as any other New Yorker.

And yet, for too long, we have been told to ask for less than that, and endure hatred and bigotry in the shadows.

No more.

In Canada, you have an express constitutional protection of your right to live anywhere in the country & carry on business there (s. 6 of the Charter).
They’ve all gone mad.

So this is an AI-created video. Watch the mouth. This has been pointed out many times and yet the post is still up. I highly recommend blocking people who post this shit and don’t take it down when corrected

It's a simple point, but this is not how a democracy is supposed to function. The President represents the public and distributes goods and benefits through a system in which all members of the public have equal access. Power is not to be hoarded or distributed to one's friends.
