Great to see my analysis below featured in @chriscurtis94.bsky.social article for @newstatesman.com

Greater Manchester has been the fastest growing part of the country in the past decade – measured either by total growth or by productivity growth. I’ve had a look into the data to try to work out what is growing and why.

Below are some of the things I have found.

Of course
A Tory MP is hiring a "red tape researcher" to fight "sclerotic regulations" obstructing "wealth creation".

Two clicks away from that ad, on his website, he boasts about his repeated objection to building houses on a field in his constituency.
Anyway, I was there to do an interview in a field about why theme parks are actually great.

A broken planning system and constantly giving in to NIMBYs is why we don't have better ones in the UK.

Consultations aren't representative and we should always take them with a massive pinch of salt.

But usually those that oppose a project are far more likely to respond than those that support (like, 5 to 6 times more likely).

So getting a response like this really is quite something.
...after working their way around most of the room and everyone in support, they saw an elderly woman in the corner. They wandered over, assuming they must be on to a winner, only for her to reply "it's great, loads of jobs and my grandchildren will love it".
When I read articles like this I remember when I popped into the local cafe in Stewartby the day after the announcement for a coffee.

The owner said they had a journalist vox-popping in there the day before, trying to find someone who opposed the project...

New pictures have been revealed of work starting on the UK's first Universal Studios theme park. Universal Bedford is set to open in 2031.

I was more referring to Andrew Neil's (and I suppose also Ganesh's) take that the economy is fine actually.

A day after the allotment society itself stepped forward to almost entirely debunk it. Is there a single NIMBY cause they won’t attach themselves to? We’ve yet to find it!
The Greens are now heavily pushing this allotment story
It's giving strong "my little brother stole my last KitKat" energy.
Looking for Edinburgh Fringe recommendations, if anyone has any thoughts for what I shouldn't miss.

Imagine buying a new-build and paying full council tax, only to find you must pay a private company to fix the road and streetlights - and the fees can rise at any point with no explanation.

Also, you live by road full of potholes that apparently nobody owns

Who is accountable in privatised Britain?
From unadopted housing estates to a road no one seems to own – hollowed-out local government can no longer cope.

"I think a lot of things are shit. We need to un-shitafy it as quickly and as radically as possible."

Labour MP Chris Curtis says Farage "could be running this country" if the gov't don't urgently address the public's concerns.

@chriscurtis94.bsky.social is absolutely right - this is urgent.

It's families in temporary accommodation and people struggling to pay their energy bills who are facing the consequences of our failure to build homes and energy infrastructure.

Reform DOGE is a very good thing tbh. It should be encouraged. Let them see where the money is actually going and then still pretend there are billions to cut on woke.
Good
Mighty Hoopla, Field Day, etc, will 100% be going ahead as planned from this weekend insist the festival organisers...despite a court finding they don't have the appropriate planning permission. They have applied to Lambeth council to get the required permission.

Dan is right (and it’s why Gary S frustrates me so much - it’s very much “try this simple trick to fix society that only impacts people you hate”). Ultimately we are probably not at the revenue maximising top rate of tax, but there v likely is a rate where the revenue sign is negative.
Here's Gary Stevenson calling for a return to the 1970s, when the top rate of tax was 98%. But did the rich ever pay it?

We spoke to 1970s tax dodgers and ex-HMRC staff & and crunched the data.

A 🧵, but here's a spoiler: the rich pay more tax *now*.

Britain’s economic decline is an emergency – like war or a pandemic. If we don’t put an end to it, Nigel Farage will be Prime Minister.

The system is addicted to inertia. It needs shock therapy, now.
