Unsurprising to find paying higher overtime can cut waiting lists. Paying NHS staff higher overtime might be more cost effective for reducing waiting lists than contracting to the private sector. BMA says that a reason for many unfilled extra doctors’ shifts is low pay

Paying consultants more ‘helped trust cut waiting lists by nearly 20%’
A single trust accounted for nearly a fifth of the reduction in the national waiting list last year - and a director says the improvement was in part driven by paying staff higher overtime rates.

When patients are not heard by their doctors there can be devastating consequences.

So why does this happen & what can be done to address it?

On the cover, Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan explores this question.

Cover of The Lancet's Feb 15, 2025 issue. Quote on cover reads "At the core of patients not being heard is the unequal power dynamic between doctor and patient. Each holds a different form of expertise...It is vital that we combine this expertise and collaborate."

Behind this astonishingly impressive £30k. / month savings (amazing for a health system in crisis) is also an increase in people leading healthier lives, experiencing fewer episodes of poor health, and material steps to closing wide gaps in health inequalities.

Health is so holistic: research suggests flossing #teeth 'cuts risk of #stroke by one fifth’.

This is huge. Should some of the ££ the #NHS spends on heart disease be transferred to dentistry? If Dept of #Health is serious about #prevention then maybe yes?

Yes - you can use your phone and eat chocolate brownies! Great meeting today with our admin teams to discuss the work of my medical student to understand barriers to patients attending the diabetic eye clinics. Lots of discussion and great use of menti to capture everyone’s ideas.

Does NAP 7 show we’ve lost our way with human factors?

A short piece I wrote for @assocanaes.bsky.social on #humanfactors - missed opportunities around debriefing, CRM and simulation, and the thorny issue of transposing aviation standards to our practice.

So true. The best thing I have been involved in during the last few years is our sight loss advisor service - partnering with local charities and county council sensory teams. Providing great sign posting and support for our patients.

This is your name in braille, Christina!
"Christina" in text with a visual representation of the braille above, separated by a pink line. The text "Remember - braille is read by touch, this is just a visual representation" and the Braille 200 logo is in the corner, with a visual representation of braille, and RNIB and EBU logos.

Thought we were far enough south to miss the snow but after a last holiday meal out with the boys came out of the restaurant to settling snow. Rather slippery journey home! They had to do a bit of clearing to get up the drive but now safely back and enjoying an impromptu jazz session.

Love this. Did lots of crochet whilst recovering from surgery. Some baby hats for colleagues and Xmas pot holders (tried tapestry crochet but forgot to take a photo before I gave it away ). Happy New Year!
