I'm not sure they really need pressure. When I spent a lot of time in the UK 15+ years ago, there was wall-to-wall coverage of the refugee crisis.
It's not just that the United States has stopped trying to promote liberal democratic ideas internationally. It's that the United States is actively trying to promote the contrary. It's trying to turn more countries into Hungary.

For non-lawyers: this is the largest sanction against an attorney for frivolous conduct that I've ever heard of*. When attorneys are sanctioned $10-$20k is a big deal. This is a MASSIVE deal.

*- not counting the slightly different issue of defendants having their answer struck for misconduct.
NEW: An unanimous appeals court panel — authored by conservative Judge William Pryor and joined by Trump appointee Andrew Brasher — upheld a $1 million sanction againt Trump/Habba for filing a "frivolous" lawsuit against Hillary Clinton

There was a whole industry at the turn of the 20th century devoted to mass producing low-cost decorative elements like cast iron cornices for multistory buildings.

I'm personally cool with brutalism, but we should do what we gotta do to sell high density to the masses.
NEW PAPER w/ @cselmendorf.bsky.social & @jkalla.bsky.social:

An under-appreciated reason why voters oppose dense new housing, especially in less-dense neighborhoods: they think it looks ugly and want to prevent that, even in other neighborhoods.

Some of what we think is NIMBYism might not be!

There is a scene from "The Crown" where Sir Anthony Eden is slumped over on a plane with a needle in his arm and two Americans are commenting along the lines of: "The power of the British Empire indeed".

Same vibe here.

Mom was just telling me about how her parents' house in B'ham was seized by eminent domain in 1963 for a cut rate to make way for an interchange. They had not paid off much of the mortgage, so my grandmother had to get a second job as a nurse.

They got a new place, but were in such dire 1/

I have been such an LLM skeptic, and I still maintain that AGI is way overhyped, but current gen LLMs are totally amazing language and search machines (with all the caveats).

If you don't know how to use them to your advantage, you're going to have problems.
