"Critics warn that a small group of tech companies, including Nvidia, are essentially buying & selling to each other in circular deals that inflate their actual value."

@governorferguson.bsky.social why should regular folks shoulder the safety net, while these companies get tax breaks?

I am wishing I remembered all the great answers to the prompt I posed some years ago “what does COP stand for, wrong answers only” from the Evil Site

Some here:
“Convoy of Polluters”
“Carbon Offsets, Pshaw”
“Capitalism Over People”
With the disappointing progress at Cop30, evergreen reminder it isn't "we" or "humanity" failing to address the climate crisis — oil-producing nations and fossil fuel interests are actively obstructing action, despite heroic efforts by developing nations, Indigenous peoples, and many, many others.
End of fossil fuel era inches closer as Cop30 deal agreed after bitter standoff
Wealthy countries should triple funds for countries to tackle climate impacts, but deforestation and critical minerals blocked from final deal

“This is the Amazon COP. If it ends with a decision that ignores Indigenous rights and props up offset markets that science says cannot work, it will squander the moral clarity of this moment,” a new op-ed argues.

It’s time to end the carbon offset era, COP30 scientists & communities say (commentary)
At COP30 in Belém, the first climate summit held in the Amazon, something rare has happened. For years, the risks and failures of carbon offsetting have been dismissed as activist exaggeration or…

I actually thought I had shared this on here and I hadn't. But if you want to look at why Tehran has to move it's climate change, yes, but it's genuinely fascinating as a failure of long term planning/ not understanding water supplies.
you'd think the forced displacement of 10 million people from one of the oldest centres of civilisation in human history would get a little more news attention than beltway journalists writing essays on how Olivia Nuzzi is a genius because they want to bone her and you'd be wrong
'Iran’s capital must be moved because the country “no longer has a choice,” President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Thursday in remarks carried by state media, warning that severe ecological strain has made Tehran impossible to sustain'

Climate diplomacy is failing us, no matter which country hosts the COPs.
As long as this system keeps granting so much access to the fossil fuel and agribusiness climate arsonists (aka lobbyists), we'll keep being told to celebrate minor progressive language and new meetings to set meetings.

The defenses of Olivia Nuzzi are confusing until I realized how many people just plainly admit they admire, support and continue to champion someone who got caught and experienced consequences for being unethical (twice?!) and further hurt the reputation of women journalists as a result.
