This reminded me of a conversation I had with a botanist who did field work associated with the then newly found black-footed ferret colony. He noted that the local prairie dogs were beat up, missing ear parts, scarred etc, and realized they are food. Haven’t thought of them as anything else since.
Well fed prairie dogs at the Valles Caldera.

Gunnison's prairie dogs are abundant in the Valles Caldera. They have a complex social structure, with a sophisticated alarm call system, and live in interconnected burrows that have separate areas for sleeping, eating, and waste.

Delightful story. Perfect for this week.
OK - pie discourse - best pie story:

In 2016, we were living in Andover, in the UK. My wife was assigned as an exchange officer at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop (yes, really).*

The US Army has a tradition: senior leaders, in dress uniform, serve junior troops Thanksgiving dinner.

Nice to have guy home. He napped while I had a meeting and now time for a lite dinner and a strong cocktail. Going to bed early tonight.

He spent almost a whole day with me. I divulged more than I usually do, things about my personal life I don’t talk about. I appreciated him taking a sincere interest. So just want to say thank you @gustavoarellano.bsky.social for this feature.

I was not quite prepared to see the foot of staples in the guy’s stomach tonight. But he’s got his IVs out and might get the drain removed tomorrow, too. (I’d kinda rather not have to help with a drain - not a biologist)

I can’t tell you how much better he looked and acted today. Amazing.

do you have any idea how much you have to piss somebody off to make them change their gauge
#Finland will begin to #Russia - proof its rail network, integrate with EU train infrastructure.

The Finnish government has announced the conversion of its rail network from Russian gauge (1,524 mm) to European standard (1,435 mm).

So the guy had a one in a million non cancer tumor called an insulinoma on his pancreas that they removed (along with his spleen). This tumor caused years of really whack blood sugar issues and they are very hard to diagnose. The cool thing is that his BS has stabilized almost immediately.

DOGE was always a very thinly disguised con to dress up data theft and extraction class destruction of federal corporate oversight as innovative, and it's important to remember that part of the reason it worked so well is that the press helped legitimize it
hey don't be so hard on yourselves; it delivered oceans of sensitive government and citizen data to billionaires
