Over 200 years old, Braille is an amazingly engineered system of reading and writing. And yet it remains foundationally inaccessible to most (mostly aging) people who could benefit from it, including basics like reading elevator buttons or emergency signage. stanforddaily.com/2024/10/06/b...
Despite braille's 200th anniversary, there is a braille literacy crisis
Fahim shares her research team's insights into why braille literacy is less than 25% in the U.S. and why braille remains relevant in an audio age.

Old Norse had a special word for the blue-black color ravens are: bloð (pronounced bloth with a voiced th like this or with).

It’s also the color Odin wears, and the color Hel is on the dark half of her body. In sagas it’s the color you wear when heading out to die on a vengeance quest.

one big hint that the Anglo Canadian French education system doesn't give a shit about actual functional understanding is that it teaches Metropolitan French rather than Québecois French

you know, the primary version of French that's *actually spoken* in Canada

Check to see if you have a halal market in your area, they usually sell US lamb and it's often actually pretty local. Not having one nearby has cut me off from my most reliable source of extra cash.

early fall exists; aftertaste, afterthought;
seclusion and angels exist;
widows and elk exist; every
detail exists; memory, memory's light;
afterglow exists; oaks, elms
junipers, sameness, loneliness exist;
eider ducks, spiders and vinegar
exist, and the future, the future

If you think you know why US newspapers died, this feature documentary now streaming for free on PBS might surprise you. It wasn't the Internet. Newspapers were specifically targeted by vulture capitalists.

I composed the score for the film, which features electric cello & Crowfoot guitars.

It’s a perfect morning for practicing on the porch.
A photo taken through the strings of my lever harp, with the harp’s frame framing the picture. We’re outside on the front porch, overlooking my marvelously messy garden. But the star of the show, the real focal point, as seen through the harp strings. is a gigantic black pot of orange marigolds atop a red and white cooler.
