Why Was Bad Bunny Singing on Top of a Broken Utility Pole at the Super Bowl?

It was a powerful moment to bring attention to the energy crisis in Puerto Rico--and a reminder to U.S audiences of the injustices Puerto Ricans endure at the hands of private energy companies.
Why Was Bad Bunny Singing on Top of a Broken Utility Pole at the Super Bowl?
Bad Bunny’s 13-minute performance at the big game was an ode to Puerto Rico — and its energy woes.

Three thoughts.

1. It’s always been about the white nationalism

2. He is returning to the old favorites because his support is waning

3. He dabbled with this trope before but would always leave a hair of deniability. Going straight there also seems like a sign of weakness

Mrs. Coretta Scott King addressed the Havard graduating class of 1968 two months after her husband's assassination.

She spoke on the then recent assassinations plaguing the country and the unjust war in Vietnam. #MLKDay

There are raids going all over Los Angeles. I just saw video of ICE chasing some guy through the parking lot of my local supermarket.
Important. There has not been a deescalation.

One thing I found deeply moving about resistance in the Twin Cities was the universalism of loving your neighbor, the philosophy driving the opposition to the ICE/BP invasion. I couldn't help but notice the contrast with the blood and soil-ism of Miller and Vance. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Stop what you’re doing and read this piece, which is as powerful as you’d expect from @adamserwer.bsky.social witnessing the events of last week on the ground in Minnesota. “The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone.”
Minnesota Proved MAGA Wrong
The pushback against ICE exposed a series of mistaken assumptions.

The problem with symbolic compliance isn’t just that they fall short of ending violence.

It’s also that people duped by the symbols will switch sides to defend the oppressor, emboldening them to become more violent and violate more civil rights than before.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

in trying to understand what makes ICE and CBP so dangerous right now, it is tempting to imagine some new lack of training or experience or professionalism—and not grapple with the truth that a white nationalist movement has put more power and force behind their existing mission

It’s not so much that Trump & co don’t think slavery was important, they want to remove this history precisely *because* of how important it was. They don’t want people to learn about slavery because then people would understand how it continues to shape the landscape of inequality in America today.
Signs about the history of slavery in the U.S. and the 9 people George Washington enslaved are being removed right now at the President’s House Site in Philadelphia, across from Independence Hall, months after the Trump administration threatend to do so.

How far we have not come in 250 years.

Then tuck in your main character feels and get to work. Like the rest of us are.
