Big week in Berlin for FoTI with two events we’ve put on - our small cloud roundtable x KAS x @openmarkets.bsky.social and the very big and open #Euroskylive.

In town for the sovereignty summit? Come say hi 👋 🤓
I missed this on budget day - Reeves kept the UK's digital services tax. A spot of good news! No sense asking Big Tech to pay less.

Once more, Ribera takes no bullying and stands up for Europeans. Showing the rest of the Commission how it's done
The European digital rule-book is not up for negotiation.
We, Europeans, have adopted our rules to ensure fair markets and to protect consumers rights while backing Europe’s digital future.
It’s our duty to preserve our values and to defend our people. 🇪🇺

Huh. Smart cookie, Lucy Prebble, I hadn’t seen they brought back Enron the Musical in London this fall.

I’d go to an AI Crash musical. But what genre should it be: glam rock, to go with Jensen’s jackets? Opera, for glorious excess?

$NVDA now in the “we’re totally not Enron, guys” phase of this cycle. 😬
In the memo, “Nvidia also responds to claims that the ‘current situation is analogous to historical accounting frauds (Enron, WorldCom, Lucent) that featured vendor financing and SPVs [special purpose vehicles.)’”

Europe in dangerous territory. Putting democratic protections on the chopping blocks for trade concessions invites a slippery slope. Increasingly tariff negotiations cuts at the heart of European national security.

Lutnick is back, with another 'shred your law and roll over for Trump and Big Tech or your heavy industry gets it' threat.

No dodging this test of wills. We heard some will in Berlin last week - Merz, Macron. Will we hold?

Break chokepoints, build alternatives.

Takeaways from #eurosky: big tech social media displaced journalism, a core pillar of democracy, and has been bad for society. EU lawmakers want European, privacy-centered tech. There are still questions of whether the internet is worth building on and what to build. But they are talking about it

Ok forgive a blatant birthday swag brag but - I know y’all read - how cool is this?!

This posh Mayfair bookshop (apparently in a Le Carré, @nickharkaway.com?) run a service wherein some bright spark asks what you love and cooks you up a yearly books playlist. Love. 🧡

Yes. If we don't like this - another tech oligarch metastasising into a media mogul - we should support breaking up Google's profit engine (adtech). EC's final decision is on deck. DOJ's closing its breakup case tomorrow - my birthday! Structural separation, at this point, is the moderate stance.

Great article (!) about the @eurosky.social conference with mentions of:
Eine Gruppe von Entwicklerinnen und Entwicklern plant, eine europäische Infrastruktur für soziale Netzwerke zu schaffen. Das Ziel: ein offenes System, das von keinem Tech-Konzern abhängig ist – und weniger schlechte Laune macht. @seabass.bsky.social hat mir mehr erzählt:

FoTI hosted (if I say so myself!) a fab Chatham House roundtable about this yesterday with @openmarkets.bsky.social, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, concerned businesses and more.

A new consensus is forming - the old one is crumbling.

Brace for a hell of a lot of sovereignty-washing as it falls, tho.
Crowdstrike (Microsoft), AWS, Cloudflare failures:

"These incidents are not random. They reflect a deeper, structural issue: Internet consolidation has reached a point where the failure of a single provider can destabilize significant parts of the global Web."

ICYMI! Dutch competition enforcers are piling in to help the 3x new DMA cloud investigations. This is *great* - with the EC team so short-staffed, they badly need reinforcements.
