I highly recommend watching this segment, not just because the CBS News execs and the White House didn’t want you to, but because these men were tortured and they deserved to have their voices heard.
!! Here’s a link to full video of the 60 Minutes segment that Bari Weiss killed last minute, via @jasonparis.bsky.social:

I’ve been in game dev for 26 years and I can’t remember any other time where a specific tech was being insistently and persistently pushed on devs as a group in the public sphere.

Why would it? Cui bono? Why would any given dev have an interest in other devs using tech they don’t have a stake in?
My conspiracy theory about genAI in games blowing up more and more by big companies is that they’ve all got a ton of investors insisting they use genAI tools otherwise they(investors) won’t be able to bankroll em anymore

People deliberately conflating gen AI with NPC AI in games is just being a damned liar. I can understand people not getting the nuance between machine learning algorithms and LLMs, in part because that conflation is the fault of marketeers, but throwing NPC AI in there as well is deliberate.

Any time you work on anything, you are going to hit those "UH OH" moments where your stomach drops as you see a similar project that makes yours feel derivative and uninteresting and doomed to fail.

That's normal! Regroup, adapt, persevere! Your perspective has value!

So the guy himself is saying they arent really even seeing productivity gains? He said they are just using AI because they are afraid of being left behind. He is inviting this public scorn by repeating techbro talking points for no benefit at all. The mind of a CEO is fascinating.
If I had known the two paragraphs about genAI in my article today would be so controversial, I would have expanded them a bit! Here's a rough transcript of the relevant portion of my interview with Swen Vincke, so everyone has all the context. (Full article here: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...)

Before I even started my career I began on a game design course before switching to coding.

When people are surprised about the dramatic shift I always point out how I love the ability to be creative with it. Just a thought on this.

There’s this weird thing I see a lot where lots of people no matter where they fit on the ai acceptance spectrum are like “my discipline is unique and special but others are just filler and unimportant”
‘Oh all our art is hand made but we did do some ai generation for unimportant dialogue’

Larian's horrible hirring process is an open secret in the industry – insane amounts of unpaid work in "writing tests", excessive numbers of interviews, months and months of back and forth, etc. Everyone in games narrative circles has heard the stories at this point, probably from multiple people.
I know this because they tried to recruit me and I strongly considered it but they’re also a “do an unpaid writing test where you have to also make it playable” company so that’s not something I vibe with

Look man I don’t think the people being poisoned by data centers really care if you remove the generated assets before shipping, and I don’t really care if you “only” use the machine that stole my shit and convinced teens to off themselves for internal PowerPoints.

Cool motive. Still bullshit tho.

Everyone who uses AI for content gen tries to justify it with increasingly bizarre mitigations from "we're only using it to prototype", "we're only using it to iterate", "we're only using it to fill in some gaps", "we're barely even using it", "hey it still took us all night", "it's not even good"

I don't know why the idea of developing concept art with AI is somehow meant to convince us that AI isn't replacing creative professions, when concept art is one of the single most creative and imaginative parts of the entire development process.

I feel like most people that vote don't care. Like there's some overlap between"protect our women" folk voting them and people who commit domestic abuse.

Still, it's worth learning and informing family and friends. Hopefully some can be deterred from Reform. It's practically a criminal gathering.
FromFB: If you're going to vote #Reform, be sure you know who you're voting for.

They're one or all of these - useless, incompetent, liars, violent, racist, sexual predators or offenders.

Are these the people you want looking after your community?

I think at this point I just have to accept that I have no self-control when I start a new series. Instead of doing what else I need or want to do, I've just binged White Lotus season 2 instead.

Good show, but.

It's the same argument that Landlords have been pushing to have businesses return to office work, people doing what they want is hurting their bottom line.

People staying away from X is hurting their bottom line/ad revenue, so like Landlords, they use made up excuses to try and get people back.
"Bluesky is an echo chamber."
"Bluesky doesn't have enough reach"
"Liberals must return to X to challenge the far right"

This kind of versatility doesn't get enough credit IMO because it's considered more critically respectable to maintain a distinctive style and keep returning to the same themes.
Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

I just started watching White Lotus season 2 and the first episode has a line about how rich people's brains seem to just atrophy and reality has done little to disprove this to me.
I have grown to believe that excessive wealth does something to your brain that is analogous to a serious head injury
