Three months ago I bought an old Superman comic and found an oddly familiar looking space telescope inside. Today, I've just had an article about it published by Scientific American!

How Superman Helped Launch the Hubble Space Telescope
Long before it orbited Earth, the Hubble Space Telescope starred in a famous Superman comic

Great news! Can't wait to see what you do with them. :)

A scene like that doesn't create monsters but it does create circumstances where monsters can rise to the top and become even worse monsters. Luckily we all learned our lesson at the end of the 2000s and none of that applies to the world we're living in today. :/

Must emphasise cos this is Bluesky, I'm not defending him or making excuses for him. I just hated that scene at the time & I see him as an embodiment of that "ironic" detachment & nihilism pushed to the most extreme and deplorable degree.
paulgcornish.bsky.social
I'm definitely not saying that everyone who was part of that scene was as bad as him, but I can see how being surrounded by that attitude (& lots of fan-worship, money & drugs) could make a certain type of person escalate their behaviour until they were an absolute monster.

Re: Ian Watkins - I met people in that weird Welsh emo poser scene in the 2000s & there was definitely a sort of self-destructive nihilistic edge to it that found ironic humour, & even pride in being vain, selfish, & generally horrible. I always thunk about that when I hear the "megalolz" story.

DCKO's whole deal so far has been "sounds daft but is actually brilliant" and this announcement is entirely in keeping with that.

(Everyone should check out Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees by the way)

For those who don’t know, also in this image is Homelander, Vampirella, Red Sonja, Annabelle, Sam from @patrickhorvath.bsky.social’s comic, and Sub-Zero.

This is a fascinating thread.

It occurs to me that the Doctor's polyethnic identity in recent times recontextualises Peter Davison's casting in quite an interesting way.
(For context, although you'd be unlikely to guess it by looking at him, Davison's paternal family is Guyanese. He has close relatives who are visibly Black.)

Elizabeth Olsen here, accidentally putting her finger on why Marvel movies aren't as good as they used to be.

Headline on clickbait site:

MCU star Elizabeth Olsen is aware of superhero fatigue, and argues that "these movies aren't for
critics, these movies are for fans"

I'm suddenly compelled to read this again... can't imagine why. :)

Never listen to fans. We're idiots who demand the thin gruel of cameos & references over the nourishing meal of story & character & our appetite will never be sated.

Loved the Peacemaker finale. No spoilers but I love how @jamesgunn.bsky.social prioritises what's right for the story & the characters over what fans say they want. It's like he's taking the DCU in the opposite direction of ehere the MCU is going & it's ultimately a much more satisfying experience.

If anyone is in or near Bristol tonight and wants to try something new, how about a live presented Planetarium show about dark matter, gravitational waves, dark energy, the Big Bang, and the end of the Universe?

You're absolutely right, that wouldn't work at all.
paulgcornish.bsky.social
It's interesting that people got that impression. I felt the meta-message in issue #1 was that the characters are sick of being rebooted and are willing to actively fight against it. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I hate how inevitable it is that within a few years, the people in this article will be MPs and/or opinion columnists and there will be literally no escape anywhere from their mad opinions & their obnoxious and contrived oddness.

For over 25 years, science and discovery centres have been at the heart of inspiring millions of people to explore, question, and be part of UK science and technology.

But they're seriously under threat… 1/3

No spoilers, but in Action Comics #1091, @markwaid.bsky.social just did his own interpretation of what the Man of Steel movie was going for with Pa Kent's infamous death scene - and it was fantastic! I always admired what that scene was trying to do, so to see it done so well in the comic was great.

That's horrifying! :D Does Captain Scarlet ever experience any existential angst about this???
paulgcornish.bsky.social
Something I never understood as a kid - Is Captain Scarlet actually Captain Scarlet? Or is he a Mysteron with Captain Scarlet's memories & and personality?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Also, is James Robinson's Scarlet Witch any good?
