Reminder that ICE warrants are not signed by a judge, if you are a citizen and someone needs to hide, you’re not obligated to do shit by an administrative warrant, you can just not open the door for ice and if they enter your home without a warrant do not say shit to them, get a lawyer and sue

they are at a point where they may lose interest in learning, just being strict can backfire badly. It is a delicate balance, ultimately the time they spend in school is supposed to benefit them not alienate them

Yup, ultimately the way to best police ai is the kind of close teacher-student interaction that good college classes have but a lot of large high school and survey level English classes in college don’t have, which is a hint that maybe we need less 75+ student lectures with underpaid grad students

I have colleagues who use the detectors, it’s asking for trouble bringing accusations against a student based on that kind of tech, but like you said the students usually have timestamps for edit history when it’s a false positive. Still, the tech really shouldn’t be how we’re evaluating that

Honestly, the single best way to sus out whether a student is using ai is discuss their paper with them, if they know the material off book, they actually learned something

The automated systems have extremely high false positive rates, you can run pre-gen ai texts through them and get 90%+ ai generated results. There simply isn’t a reliable way to prove ai was used for something, while yes there are fairly good ways to prove you didn’t use ai-timestamped edit records+

Exactly, and ai writing dis not getting better because it will always bias toward the way most people write (since it’s just recreating dominant patterns from the training corpus), which no offense to my fellow internet users, is not especially good stylistically
