When a pedestrian is not paying attention and walks into something, no one dies. When a driver is not paying attention and drives into something people are often injured/killed. How long will it fucking take for society to STOP EQUATING THE TWO?
Cllr Atkinson asks about educating public re: pedestrian injuries/deaths. Deputy Chief O'Brien says peds + drivers both need education. People are being hit in crosswalks + jaywalking. Drivers not paying attention. "We’re trying to target everybody because it is a shared responsibility." #yyccc

A WEEK in this city. How is the strategy of "people just need to drive better" going, folks? Don't talk to me about safety in this city unless you're talking about cars. A city built around cars is a city built for death and injury. #yyc

Trains are comrades and we do not cork 'em!
Somebody should have told this driver not to cork the train ... Ha ha @criticalmassyyc.bsky.social Spun the SUV right around, luckily there was nothing to squish into or it would have been a lot worse. It was some sweet chaos downtown #yyc today.

#yyc I'm running out of words to describe the UCP. Passing anti-trans bill 9 using the notwithstanding clause to remove charter rights from trans Albertans, a day before the trans day of remembrance, is so ghoulish and utterly reprehensible.

The Government of Alberta’s proposed use of the notwithstanding clause to shield its three pieces of anti-trans legislation deserves forceful opposition.

At COP30 Canada just got awarded the fossil of the day — first time since 2014 (the harper years). Clear sign of how Carney’s pro fossil fuel agenda and backsliding on climate policy is being noticed internationally.

It’s got to be the phones.

And the giant vehicles that make it impossible to see people in front of them.

And of course the phones.
Same in Calgary.

"We’ve seen a 225% increase in pedestrian deaths over the past decade."

Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary is already a death trap. 18 years ago my parents were hit by a truck that crossed the median just outside of Olds. They survived, but it changed all of our lives forever.

Policy like this will only lead to more tragedies.

GET IN THE GAME!

Calgary's recently released budget shows ZERO extra funding to tackle the growing chaos on our streets.

This is simply not acceptable and requires all of us in #yycbike to write letters, and perhaps plan to speak in #yyccc later this month.

One of @jeromyyyc.bsky.social 's platform policy briefs talks about "a safer Calgary". Of course, he isn't talking about the rising danger of vehicle violence. He's talking about more policing of homeless people. With his latest motion to repeal rezoning, he has no interest in helping those in need

Calgary police are on a rampage downtown, using drones to find people and clear them off streets. Posting photos of unhoused folks they arrest (see twitter).

It’s collective punishment for social disorder and violence they have failed to improve with prior violence.

Film the cops if you see them.
