I guess I should introduce myself: Salut! I'm Alanna, or Lansi. WHOA (lansi) cuz I can be a little intense; I'm not for everyone, & that's ok.

I'm an accidental urbanist - we traded our second vehicle for a cargo bike in October 2023. I now do all my running around #YYC by bike, & I love it.
Had to abandon riding on the road halfway to after school pickup and ride the sidewalk. The snirt is here. #yycbike

WOOHOO!!!! YOU DID IT!

I'm at 3360 km on the UA this week (with about 100 kms on other bikes) so I'll probably hit my 3500 km goal before December too! Look at us go! (When we set this goal, I thought I'd be down to the last second to make it.)
Completed my riding goals for the year. 3500km total and a 100km ride.

A WEEK in this city. How is the strategy of "people just need to drive better" going, folks? Don't talk to me about safety in this city unless you're talking about cars. A city built around cars is a city built for death and injury. #yyc

17th MUP, Sarcee to 37- sort of cleared but think Paris-Roubaix cobbles roughness (WTF!)
Westbrook to Red Bridge - good snow compaction
Shag hill - 👍🏻
Snow pile under centre - still there, will be all winter
Centre to Reconciliation- death ruts
Bonnybrook south - full width clear

#yycbike After taking my typical 1-2 days off after a big snow event, back to it today. No terrible scenarios. Snirt starting on side roads, but otherwise Sunalta School overpass + 12 Ave (bt 18 St W and 4 St SE) and downtown grid in good shape (ice ruts on EB 8 Ave at 4/5 St though), easy w/ studs

Very excited for this ride. Our kids will probably ride in our box bike—it's typically cold & snowy. Definitely a highlight for us every year!
Have you tried the kidicalmass ride organized by @whoalansi.bsky.social ? They have finished for this year but there is a Santa Scramble kidicalmass happening too! Group rides are a great way to meet friends 🥰

This is probably going to sound so odd, but I made a ramen-inspired burrito. I had some leftover broth that I added to scrambled eggs & wrapped it up in a tortilla with nori, green onion, & kewpie. It was so good. (I also added gochujang because it's my favourite "hot sauce").

#yycbike report: residential streets are packed down. Reasonably easy riding with studs & maybe some weight in the front of your bakfiets.

Time to remove all religion from politics. Quote scripture, get fined. I don’t want you making decisions based on what your competing imaginary friends are alleged to have said through magic tablets, burning bushes, or the voices in your head.

Secularize politics.

I was assured that Balmoral Circus would be a priority snow clearing route when I expressed concerns over some of the design features that are dangerous when they get icy. Is this what passes for cleared? This is a main connection along a bikeway. #yycbike

#yycbike report: route through confed to 24th is fine. One side is plowed better than the other. 24th could be much better. Street plows clearly cleared into the cycle track. Once you cross crowchild...good luck. Uni is meh, as it is every winter. Take the lane through campus.

Morning #yycbike update: Bow north was cleared from George King bridge east around the zoo now. Section from the bridge to Bridgeland station was pure ice, use lots of caution. Plenty of bumpy hard bits all over this morning. Some side streets are nice hard pack.
Afternoon update #yycbike: Fox hollow hill and Nose creek cleared to Memorial. Bow north around the zoo and west to East Village not cleared (grrr). I wonder if we need to 311 it since this section was closed due to construction for over a year? Riverwalk and Eau Claire cleared.
#yycbike report (0530): Eau Claire, Riverwalk, Bow north and Nose Creek MUP all ~3cm snow covered. East Village had sweeper crews out already. Snow is light and easy to ride through.

& the back part of my out & back commute for school drop off. The snow on the trees & the sunrise in the distance are just a couple things that bring me joy on winter bike commutes. #yycbike

#YYCbike report : snow on residential routes is quite packed down. It's no match for a decent set of studded winter tires. Definitely the season of keeping steady momentum to stay upright. Really wish there was better daylighting around these intersections.

Any political “leader” still selling the obviously false choice between #ClimateAction and “the economy” is just reminding us that they clearly don’t understand either the climate crisis OR the economy.

Or they’re cynically hope that WE don’t understand the difference.

Or both.

Ultimately this is a regulatory problem that serious people in transport department offices dismissed because bikes are thought of as a child’s toy, a rich man’s hobby, or a poor man’s last resort. (Gender deliberate, bc women don’t ride bikes). What other problemAtIc unreguted tech is out there?
CPSC urges consumers to immediately remove the battery from the e-bike and dispose of the battery following local hazardous waste disposal procedures. Do not sell or give away these hazardous batteries.
