Fantastic song. Probably my favourite of theirs.

Yes, that counts. Good luck with the application !

Number 4.

It’s FM, which I believe was taken from a film of the same name. Never seen the film, probably never will.

FM (No Static at all).

Not much else to say about this one, so I’ll shut up.

Definitely one of my favourite Fall tracks. I love the imagery MES uses in those lyrics. It’s genius.

Started to compile an #80sTop30 “Near Misses” playlist on Spotify and I fear some of my favourite 80s songs are being unfairly excluded from my Top 30 - I need to lodge a complaint about my poor choices.

I’m annoyed with myself for forgetting about this, for example.

I remember that well, from ye olde twitter days.

Is this the young person whose ambition in life is/was to be a carrot?

Years of drug abuse, poverty & premature hair loss have changed the way Lawrence looks. 😢

If you listen to the recording, towards the end there’s a bloke who is shouting for Templeroy. He was stood next to me. I asked him to shut up, because he was annoying me & they wouldn’t play Templeroy anyway!

I was still fairly young in 1980 and 1981 but we were all obsessed with music at the time and would often read older siblings’ copies of NME, Sounds and Melody Maker, without really understanding a lot of what we were reading. Agree re Burchill and Parsons - I’m told they were a pair of egomaniacs!

They were great live. Think I’ve mentioned this before, but this is the audio recording of the first time I saw them play live, in Bristol in May 1986 (not 1984 as it says on the YouTube description). I’d love to somehow “clean up” this recording and release it on vinyl and CD. 😀

Sadly, there weren’t enough of us. A few people buying Felt records and going to Felt gigs in provincial cities was never going to be good enough for Lawrence and his doomed dreams of stardom.

Did you ever see Felt play live? I was lucky enough to see them 3 times, once in 1986 and twice in 1987.
cruiserscreek.bsky.social
Oh well, the white vinyl sounds nice but shame about the original.

Yes, Felt have a big following these days but the records didn’t sell very well at the time, sadly. Secretly, I was pleased. I liked my obscure little group who nobody else liked. An ex once described Felt as “utterly depressing”!

Must be honest, I thought KR had “lost it” when Liars A to E was released as a single. Slagging off the music press was not a clever thing to do, in the early 80s. The NME could make, or break, careers. It’s a great song, but not a good choice of single.
All such a long time ago now. 😢
cruiserscreek.bsky.social
It would definitely have made a better single than Jackie Wilson Said, in my opinion, but everything’s easy with hindsight! Yes, probably not enough of the Emerald Express on this particular track for KR’s liking, at the time. Listening to it now, it sounds absolutely perfect!

Hi Kev. Don’t know if you’re remotely interested but I’m participating in an #80sTop30 thing on this app. I’m limiting myself to one track per artist and I’m into my top 20 now. Before much longer, you will make an appearance! I opted for Let’s Make This Precious as my DMR track. I love that song!

Still got the 12”? Very irritating when everybody else suddenly “likes” a group you’ve been supporting for a while. I used to dread Felt becoming big because they were “my group”, and I liked it that way! I needn’t have worried, Lawrence was always destined for cult stardom, not mainstream success.
cruiserscreek.bsky.social
Very good! 😂

Gareth was always telling me about this group he really liked back in Manchester. He used to go to see them at the International and the International 2. They were called The Stone Roses. I would smile and go “ok, mate”.

By the end of the decade they were HUGE!

When I first went to Hull Uni, I had the lyrics to The World is as soft as lace, handwritten by me, pinned on my wall. My room-mate Gareth (didn’t want to share a room but had no choice) tore it off the wall one night, said the lyrics were “shite”. 😡
He was OK really. A Man Utd fan from Davyhulme.

Thank you. It’s definitely a good overview of the sort of things I listened to throughout the decade. I was going to choose Primitive Painters but that felt too “obvious”, so Ballad of the Band was included. I think you chose “The World is as soft as lace”, which is gorgeous. ❤️
cruiserscreek.bsky.social
With pleasure. Here you go. I keep thinking of songs and acts which I genuinely loved ( The Smiths, Prefab Sprout, Tears for Fears, Stone Roses, Mantronix, Public Enemy, Saxon, Diamond Head) but it’s too late now. It was such a great decade that it is literally impossible to include EVERYBODY.
cruiserscreek.bsky.social
Honestly, it isn’t compulsory to look at everything I post. Most of it is rubbish anyway.

If you’d like a sneak preview of my top 30, let me know, because I can let you see it. It is an honest view of the music I listened to in the decade, so it’s personal to me.
cruiserscreek.bsky.social
@shirleystrange.bsky.social are you following my 80sTop30? It isn’t compulsory, so no problem if you aren’t. I started off in a fairly haphazard manner but I’ve now thought more deeply about it. I’m limiting myself to one track per artist, because otherwise it’ll be 30 tracks by The Fall and Felt!
