I really think science reporters and communicators need to stop referring to machine learning as AI, because there's a lot of confusion in the medical field right now.
worth remembering: "AI", as in machine learning, is a LOT older than the current round of chatbots, and it was pretty popular among tech enthusiasts (which leaned left!) for years
it wasn't until it was redefined to mean "bot that replaces artists" that everyone except billionaires turned on it

If "AI" was being built, used, and planned for in responsible ways--the way a civilization designed to enhance human thriving would do--then a lot more people would be enthusiastic about its potential. But the people in charge of defining what AI will be are the fucking worst short-term scumbags.
