Her words still ring true, as we are *still* fighting for basic rights for ALL.

“Asking you to give me equal rights, implies that they are yours to give. Instead, I must demand that you stop trying to deny me the rights all people deserve.” - Elizabeth Peratrovich, Alaskan Civil Rights Activist.
Elizabeth Jean Wanamaker Peratrovich (1911-1958) a member of the Tlingit Nation, was a key figure in the passing of the country's first anti-discrimination law, the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945, which prohibited discrimination based on race in Alaska. She also served as the Grand President of the Alaska Native Sisterhood. The fight for passage of the bill was ugly and it was extremely racist. State Senator Allen Shattuck argued that the measure would “aggravate rather than allay” racial tensions. During the Senate debate on February 5, 1945, Shattuck said, “Who are these people, barely out of savagery, who want to associate with us whites with 5,000 years of recorded civilization behind us?” Peratrovich rose from her seat in the back, took the podium and replied, “I would not have expected that I, who am barely out of savagery, would have to remind the gentlemen with 5,000 years of recorded civilization behind them of our Bill of Rights.” After giving examples of discrimination that she and her family and friends had endured over the years, she continued, “You as legislators, can assert to the world that you recognize the evil of the present situation and speak your intent to help us overcome discrimination.” She also said, “Asking you to give me equal rights, implies that they are yours to give. Instead, I must demand that you stop trying to deny me the rights all people deserve.” Alaska Governor Ernest Gruening, wrote in his autobiography that after Pertrovich’s speech, the gallery broke out in a “wild burst of applause.” The 1945 Anti-Discrimination Act was passed, by 11 votes to 5. This legislation entitled all Alaskans to “full and equal enjoyment” of public establishments, and banned discriminatory signs based on race. This bill, which was passed 14 years before Alaska became a state, and 19 years before the federal Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, was the first antidiscrimination act in the United States.

So my mom is a parasitologist. One of the growth media they use is human blood. But it expires and they have to dispose of it. Also her roses aren't doing well.

So there is my little old mom out in front of the house pouring blood bags onto her roses to fertilize them till the cops show up.
