I have one album where my favorite tracks are 1, 2, and 4, so I often skip 3. Track 3 is perfectly fine, but I worry my behavior is training this music app to consider it the most reprehensible song in the world

Honestly of all the potential misuses of generative AI in games, "writing design docs with copilot" is probably the worst one? Bad writing or bad art are one thing, bad internal docs are sending your coworkers into a spiral of time waste

Most of us did not choose to write or draw or design so that we could put products on the shelf. We chose to do it because it’s a set of skills we enjoy exercising, that give us fulfillment.

It’s like asking a pro pitcher to just let a machine pitch for them. Fuck off and give me the ball.

Back in February I happened to see a 5080 on sale for an okay price and grabbed it, thinking I'd be glad for it later if I needed an emergency replacement. I did the same with a CPU a month or two later. "That's enough for now -- it'll be easy enough to just buy RAM whenever," I thought

Trails in the Sky is my game of the year, of course, but it's no fun choosing a remake. If I had to choose a brand-new game...it might be Rune Factory! Definitely not one I expected would be in the running at the beginning of the year, especially with a new Nintendo console on the horizon

a weird specific thing i love about side story: when one of the hosts gets all excited, winding up for a punchline or big reveal, and then says "you tell them!" and throws to someone else. the generosity to let someone else say the best part! years of collaborative storytelling experience, i suppose
do you enjoy Side Story? please tell your most influential or loudest friend
this week's episode of Side Story is a duo edition, as @austinwalker.bsky.social and I sit down to talk about three very different games: Octopath Traveler 0; Blippo+; and No, I'm Not A Human sidestory.show/18-your-moth...

When there's an annoying segment in a video game, it's possible it was a special one-off thing and it won't come up again. But if it happens a second time, that's when you know you're in trouble -- no designer will make something happen only twice

The days are still getting shorter for a little while, but where I live we’ve at least passed the earliest sunset of the season. All downhill from here, right? 😬

If a company issues patch notes that only specify “bug fixes and improvements” with no further details they should be fined $500,000

shoutout to this Flecktones setlist I got signed in 2009 where Howard thought my name was Pam (probably misled by that long-stemmed D in Béla's signature there)

In 1954 film On the Waterfront, Marlon Brando laments getting a “one-way ticket to Palookaville.” This is because one-way tickets are often more expensive due to pricing models that favor round-trip bookings, leaving Brando with less cash on hand to enjoy Palookaville’s restaurants and attractions.

Every Black Friday I take the time to read what is perhaps my favorite piece in the history of online media— @jonbois.bsky.social on RadioShack’s slow, painful death.

A eulogy for RadioShack, the panicked and half-dead retail empire
This may very well be RadioShack’s final holiday season. Jon, a former employee, looks back on a strange, craven, five thousand-fingered strip-mall monster from a forgotten age.
