What sets 'good' description apart from 'mere' description?

We develop a framework for evaluating descriptive research, whether we are doing it as scholars or assessing it as readers.

Fried seafood is, with one exception, bad.

The one exception is British fish and chips.
my take on Food Discourse is that it's always ridiculous but it's also nice to be fighting about dumb internet shit again instead of dealing with Oppressive Despair all the time so please keep posting your bad takes

The consultant class is droning on about Dems being too left-wing and erring on defund the police. But I think this is exactly what "defund the police" people want to defund.

Rightly so. This instance being a mild-ish example of the type of police behavior I would very specifically like to defund.

Not sure what’s more annoying, the AI-induced feeling of impending doom for my career, or being constantly reminded about it through endless idiotic podcast ads promising me AI enhanced pet food and AI enhanced web design and AI enhanced mattresses and AI enhanced coffee beans it’s exhausting

This insane policy sums up this failed Labour govt.

They lack the vision and guts to do what is needed - re-structure and rationalise the UK tax base - so instead they wander the country squeezing whatever they can find for a few drops.

No vision. No strategy. Totally unsustainable. Deranged.
These are HEPI estimates of the 20 institutions affected: I think this illustrates the impact if the tariff is absorbed in full by institutions.

What share of the 6% tariff different universities may try to pass on to fees - or the impact might be on demand if they did - is not publicly known.

Fascism is an aesthetic ideology
Duffy: "Trump talks about the golden age of transportation. But the golden age in transportation truly begins with you ... People dress up like they're going to bed when they fly ... so we want to push people as we come into a really busy travel season: Help people out, be in a good mood, dress up"

Causal inference lost the branding battle to machine learning long ago.

Who wants to learn about SUTVA when they could be learning about support vector machines and convolutional neural nets

Man I truly hate this kind of crap. As someone who works with the next generation every day, these are brilliant young people working hard and trying to build a better future for all of us in a world that we - the olds - have systematically fucked up.

Show them some god damn respect.
It’s fun to think about the surgeon who will botch your surgery 20 years from now and what he’s doing at this moment. He just ran all his homework through ChatGPT. He just read that article about vaccines and autism at the CDC website. He just watched an Instagram video about the moon landing hoax.

LeBron dominates in raw athleticism - he has explosive power and endurance on the basketball court.

But Dan edges out in holistic fitness: sustaining 80-100 hour weeks across his research, teaching, service, and social media demands relentless physical and mental grit that outlasts seasonal peaks.

A maddening double standard from Kennedy's CDC.

RFK Jr. believes that NO studies are good enough to show that vaccines do not cause autism.

But he'll cite just about *anything* showing that vaccines might cause injury.

CDC exploits sci. uncertainty when convenient, and ignores it otherwise.

Been trying to articulate a “the internet destroyed humanity” take unsuccessfully for years and he’s only gone and done it in a single tweet
when I was young, i used to wonder how people like this would fare in life, as they didn't seem suited for gainful employment. it turns out, the internet allowed them to accumulate a massive audience of similar idiots, enriching them and turning them into a presidential advisor
