Apparently nothing triggers MAGA like the idea that "America" refers to two continents and not just part of North America.

Just going to note here that "joining the United States" does not mean "independence." It seems disingenuous that many supporters and leaders of so-called "independence" see the vote as a pit stop on the way to becoming an American territory.
📊Angus Reid Institute: "If a referendum was held on Alberta separation, would you vote for Alberta to leave Canada and become its own independent country or stay in Canada?"

All respondents:
🔴65% Stay
🔵30% Leave

CPC voters:
🔵49% Leave
🔴45% Stay

Alberta Independence: Many Leaners, but Few Committed Separatists
Among independence supporters, half would view joining the United States favourably.

I didn't see the Super Bowl, but it seems to have sent much of social media into a tizzy. "There was Spanish!" "A lesbian sang!" "And Black people!" I don't know how people live when they are wracked by fear that they may be exposed to difference.

How disabled people cook has been the subject of much debate on social media the last few days. I am chopping vegetables for a Moroccan dish and also cooking the chicken in advance for soup tomorrow night.

Canada did not have a hockey team for the 1948 Winter Olympics until a canvass of World War II veterans at the Rockcliffe RCAF station in Ottawa produced enough players to create the Flyers. It's quite a story.
On this day in 1948, Canada, represented by the Ottawa RCAF Flyers, defeated Switzerland 3-0 to capture Olympic hockey gold. It was Canada's fifth hockey gold medal. Canada outscored their opponents 69-5 in eight games. Walter Halder had 21 goals and 29 points.

Pleased to see that the Queen's University Gaels defeated Royal Military College of Canada in overtime to win the Carr-Harris Cup. This annual men's game is the oldest rivalry in hockey.

Among those Icelandic immigrants in Winnipeg were survivors of the first group of Icelanders, who went to Kinmount, Ontario, in 1874 to work on a railway and suffered terribly during the winter. My Icelandic-Canadian spouse and I have visited the monument at Kinmount.
Due to poor economic conditions, the eruption of Mount Askja and lack of available land, 20,000 Icelanders left their homes to settle elsewhere from 1870 to 1915.
Many came to Canada, settling on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg outside the confines of Manitoba.

I love these "the NFL is really worried that Kid Rock will have far more viewers than Bad Bunny" posts on social media. Bad Bunny was the most streamed artist on Spotify worldwide last year.

It's healthiest for me if I just ignore Star Trek, Star Wars, and other sci fi fandoms on social media, the rigorous policing of canon, and the incessant arguments about whether Klingons wear skirts etc. I grew up with the original Star Trek and loved it.

The Olympics are on, so it's time for MAGA to whip up outrage about a female boxer from a previous Olympics. It's like an aging band going back to their old hits.

We are loving the mountain scenery as we watch Team Canada competing in men's downhill.

I have X-rays this morning. Have been listening to Manchester United vs. Spurs while gazing out the window and wondering if I should shovel the snowdrift across the driveway.

Snow squall warning? Whatever. So we thought, and now it is completely white outside our windows. We can't see houses down the street. Praying for folks on the road.

I have been watching the Mass for the Installation of the Most Rev. Ronald Hicks as Metropolitan Archbishop of New York. Being ecumenical on a Friday night, but it has been a lovely service giving glory to God.

My spouse, who is usually a fan of Lululemon, hates the Canadian Olympic team's coats. We are old and crabby and prefer when the Hudson's Bay Company (now defunct) clothed Team Canada in red and white with toques.

The White House missed explaining that one reason American expansion was westward was the utter failure of the attempt to conquer the Canadas in the War of 1812, as British regulars and Canadian militia soundly defeated much larger American invasion armies.

I think to myself that my father would have seen Avenger (and Sea Fury) aircraft flying from Magnificent in 1951-53 before he sailed to Korea on HMCS Huron.

I'm grateful to have an Ottawa city councillor recognize caregivers. Disabled people often feel that we are pushing a boulder up hill in trying to persuade governments to include unpaid care in their home health care planning.
Their most recent report focuses on caregivers, the unsung heroes. The report found that caregivers dedicate an average of 21 hours a week, which creates a ripple effect in their professional and personal lives that is often unsupported by government.

Constant tariff wars with Canada threaten the most dependable source of potash, the primary input in making fertilizer, upon which US crop production depends, but that message just does not sink in with US decision makers. Canada had also been a major market for American produce and processed food.

Canada, Denmark and Poland were among the most steadfast allies and partners the United States has ever had. The Trump Administration has now managed to destroy these relationships. It's OK, Hungary and El Salvador are still on side.
