Yes, they are ceramic. People often ask how I get the "ceramic effect," not realizing that they actually *are* ceramic! It's truly the only way to do it!

Thanks! Everyone should be very interested in "FOO"! It's pretty cool. Should be available in April, I think.

(Thanks for the acronym.)

It’s been years since I’ve been able to read this much. I’ve been able to tear through several books. Even simultaneously. I’ve missed this super power.

Just a reminder.... The only violence involving ICE in Portland, is by ICE.

I wanna run Moria but the players are just ordinary folk from Bree, like they decided there must be treasure in Moria, let’s go adventure and get some. All the while oblivious to the larger epic story around d them. #lotr #moria #theonering #adventuresinmiddleearth I might use cairn. #carin

I've done a few interviews about Designers & Dragons Origins over the last few days, and some folks have asked about the origins of Origins.

There's a long-ish story about the DnDClassics site and the return of D&D PDFs to the world.

The product histories emerged organically from that.

How does Designers & Dragons Origins have an inspiration in Doctor Who?

This is a thread from earlier today, about how the I, WHO series of books about the Doctor Who Novels was an inspiration when I started collecting my Dungeons & Dragons product histories into books. (Click through for more.)

(The interviews will have the whole story.)

But when I set about putting those product histories into book volumes starting in 2020, I had a new inspiration: a series of books called I, WHO.

Interesting. Can you tell us more?

13th Age takes rest decisions out of the players' hands, and so does the "freeform OGL oldschool" system that I was working on back in 2010.

A fourth requirement is that you can't long rest while on a journey. They point out that places to take a long rest might include an Elf camp in Mirkwood, a Dwarven hall, and, more interestingly, a place in the wilderness like an old Elf ruin or a nice campsite next to a bright river.

Quoting a quick summary from that thread: AiME basically says you need three things for a long rest: safety from threat of an attack (so no long rest in an area with monsters where you need to post guards), comfort (so no long rest in a dank dungeon), and tranquility (an air of peace). 3/

The original developers pulled it into its own book eventually, the journey system in Uncharted Journeys. It began life in the Adventures in Middle Earth rpg. The barebones is it defined places long rests could happen at. 1/

The One Ring gave more control in the design for when rests could happen. That helped the balance a lot.

If you run D&D 5e, you might find that your boss monsters die easily. There's actually a simple reason for that!

The game was built around the assumption that characters would engage in about 20 rounds of combat between long rests.

We were probably off by a factor of 5.
A graph showing gross damage per encounter for a D&D 5e fighter. It shows each level and uses two bars to compare that gross damage for a fighter who uses at-will abilities and one who uses as many daily abilities as possible. The daily power damage output starts out as double the at-will damage and ends at about fives times as high.
