So my question is how do we establish (or reestablish) sufficient social shame that no one would make this argument in public for fear of their reputation?
Oh, it's gonna happen.

What makes Trump so infuriating is that we've known he was like this *since 2016*, when the Access Hollywood tape was released! None of this is surprising! But because the media wants to appear "balanced" and not cover the GOP less favorably, the public has never really grasped how evil he is.
the things that are actually contained in government releases and leaks from epstein's email account alone are so deranged that anyone hearing them without context would think you were having a psychotic episode

I'm gonna 'yes, but' this.

Something Chris Hayes said just before the 2016 election stuck with me - he said the Republican Party would survive a Trump loss, but he wasn't sure it would survive a Trump win. I think we're seeing that, although a ton more slowly than would be optimal.

Would in some ways be better than what we have now, honestly, because a Fuentes-run GOP could never come close to winning elections.

That wouldn't make such a thing good, of course. But "what if the GOP becomes explicitly neo-nazi in ways that low-information voters will easily grasp"? They lose
For all the leftist, liberal and moderate conservative schadenfreude over Trump's current predicament in the face of the Epstein files, a loss of control among the older generation of MAGA bosses opens up the Republican Party to a full hostile takeover by its Fuentes faction

I think this is absolutely right. They memorized the lessons of that era — triangulation, bipartisanship, government is somehow shameful — and can’t adapt to the very different world we’re now in.
IMHO, most of the Dem leadership came up through the ranks during the Reagan years and started getting seniority during the 1994 shellacking so a fighting retreat is their standard tactic. They don’t do brinksmanship well.

Really seeing once again, it seems, that the real divide in the Democratic coalition is not left/lib/moderate or anything like that.

It's the fight/no-fight divide. And the 'fight' dems are the ones winning elections.

Regular reminder that Axios stories saying Dems are about to cave are likely sourced from GOP staffers trying to make it happen.
Doesn't mean it definitely won't happen. But it's like those NYT stories that Harvard is considering caving (they haven't). The anonymous source was trying to manifest it.

How much lead do you have to ingest to think you can sell voters on your victory of creating new convoluted HSAs to replace (and, likely, be less than) what used to be a couple button clicks on the ACA marketplace website? Nobody asked for this and nobody will like it.

Call the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and they will connect you with your senator's office.

If you're represented by one of the squishier centrists, be sure to make a call. Now.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

Sandwich verdict wasn’t jury nullification. It was failure to prove the required “reasonable fear of physical injury” in a case where the agent was wearing A BULLETPROOF VEST. The only crime was the waste of resources on this case. My thoughts in @MSNBCDaily.

Opinion | The sandwich thrower was wrong. But Jeanine Pirro was, too.
To establish a forcible assault, jurors were required to find that Dunn caused “reasonable apprehension of immediate bodily harm.” That allegation was laughable.

This is actually a pretty standard and unremarkable move, as evidenced by Justice Jackson issuing it.

But most people won't believe that for several good reasons.
/1
#BREAKING: Justice Jackson has issued an "administrative" stay, temporarily pausing a district court order that would've required the USDA to continue using contingency funds to pay SNAP benefits.

The stay expires 48 hours after the First Circuit rules on USDA's request for a stay pending appeal.

What this order makes clear is that plaintiffs can collect a mountain of animus, the district court can write extensively about the record, and the Supreme Court will just go “nuh uh.”
BREAKING: The Supreme Court will allow the Trump administration to enforce its anti-trans and anti-nonbinary passport policy during litigation.

The unsigned, four-paragraph order effectively reverses two lower-court decisions. The Democratic appointees dissent.
