Ultra-high-density Neuropixels probes improve detection and identification in neuronal recordings: www.cell.com/neuron/fullt...

6 μm site-to-site spacing.

Cortical cell types could be discriminated from one another with ∼80% accuracy and from other neurons with ∼85% accuracy.

Higher-order interactions in neuronal function: From genes to ionic currents in biophysical models

Models in this study show that "a small subset of ion channel genes captures essential variability across neuronal subtypes".

Sensory origin of visually evoked activity in auditory cortex: www.cell.com/cell-reports...

Visual stimuli rarely evoke face movements.

Primary auditory cortex responses to visual input remain robust even in the absence of face movement, and optogenetic silencing of V1 reduces A1 visual responses.

A Critical Look at Critical Periods

Great review of the critical period in the visual cortex. Nice evolutionary perspective, covering the key papers and mechanisms, and proposing a continuous process of plasticity that already starts before eye opening.

A Critical Look at Critical Periods | Annual Reviews
Over the past decade and a half, a new understanding has emerged of the role of vision during the critical period in the primary visual cortex. Rather than driving competition for cortical space, visi...

My group at Science has been running a big campaign to engineer new channelrhodopsins.

Excited to share the first results from it today: a suite of highly sensitive new opsins.

We call them "WAChRs".

Everyday indoor office lighting is enough to activate them pretty strongly.

Excited to share our latest paper - now out in @science.org - we showed how oxytocin modulates maternally-directed behavior in young mice (P15).

Research with animals is a sensitive topic, and we need to be mindful of how we share these studies with general audiences. Here I only briefly share the papers, but on the blog you can read more about what we learn and why studying animals is important.

Neural recordings in non-model organisms
— Last updated on September 8, 2024 — The mouse (Mus musculus) is currently the most commonly used animal model in neuroscience research, followed by rats (post), zebrafish (post), Drosophila (post…

More on collective behavior: Our new Annual Review of Biophysics piece - with the stellar Danielle Chase - explores how animals sense, share information, and make group decisions. In honeybees and beyond 🐝

www.annualreviews.org/content/jour...
Title page of the review article 'The Physics of Sensing and Decision-Making by Animal Groups' by Danielle L. Chase and Orit Peleg in Annual Review of Biophysics. Includes illustrations of collective behavior in honeybees: a diagram showing uncommitted scout bees transitioning through decision-making to choose between two nest sites; a honeybee on a honeycomb cell; a cluster of bees hanging from a branch; and a schematic of bees forming a layered cluster.
