Poor people: “We don’t understand: we’ve given rich people everything they wanted. But life still sucks for us.
What happened?”

Rich: “No idea. Everything’s great for me. Maybe it’s the migrants?”

Poor: “Migrants you wanted as cheap labour so you could avoid training people?”

Rich: “Yeah, them”

Looking back on the murder of the brilliant and astonishing Ken Saro-Wiwa, 30 years on. He was executed for seeking to stop the despoilation of the Niger Delta by Shell. His murder prefigured much of what we have seen since. He remains a guiding light to us.

How many times do we need to point this out?
By appeasing the far right, you do not weaken it. You strengthen it.
While weakening your own position.
There's a vast amount of academic research showing this.
But Labour will not listen.

Home Office Ministers state publicly, on the record, that they are deliberately making life worse for older people and people with disabilities who depend on care services, but it's worth it because it reduces net migration.

IRL he's wrong, though. I ran into a paper about fifteen years ago, where the guy dug up tax rate and government income/GDP for a pile of countries and just graphed it out.

The result was a fairly narrow horizontal band of noise. High rates, low rates, all brought in the same revenue.

Something new. A #postcardadventcalendar. Stick with me for some nicely odd vintage images for the month, and you may end up with an expression like our friend in a deckchair in front of painted sea. Hold tight. The thread starts today:

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’
This is so disgusting.
