In Praise of Pratchett
About six years ago, I wrote a paean in praise of Terry Pratchett – because I have, for over 30 years, been enthralled by his prose. And then yesterday, I heard that he had died.  No! I cried…

You're afraid right now. But there is safety in numbers. Get together with friends, colleagues. We have the power, it is now bundled up in potential energy--time to make it kinetic by moving together! H/T @anildash.com
This is one reason I keep trying to remind people of the power that we have. That we have *always* had. Not because I’m in denial, but because I know history. I’m no sophisticated intellectual, but I do know we’re going to win even though the bad shit is really terrible right now.
Too many people on Bluesky think that relentless expressions of despair are a sign of intellectual sophistication.

As one who has worked with HPVs since 1988, AND made several novel vaccine candidates, I say FUCK, YEAH!
Fuck these absolute ghouls who apparently want to increase cancer rates.
I am hearing that RFK Jr.’s minions are going to go after HPV vaccines. I’ve got problems with these people and now you’re going to hear about them, first from a personal perspective and then from a professional one.

It all boils down to this: WE HAVE A SAFE VACCINE THAT PREVENTS CANCER.

In this piece, I reflect on what smallpox eradication and William Foege’s legacy teach us about why disease elimination is slipping away in an age of individualism, despite unprecedented scientific advances.

William Foege has died. He was a central architect of smallpox eradication, pioneering surveillance-driven ring vaccination when vaccine supply was limited. That strategy helped eliminate the deadliest human pathogen we’ve ever known.

This happens so often, it's very obvious the consequences for these scientists are not high enough.
The researchers “promised that the children’s sensitive data would be closely guarded in the decade-long study… Promotional materials included a cartoon of a Black child saying it felt good knowing that “scientists are taking steps to keep my information safe.”

The scientists did not keep it safe.”

Imagine working in education in any form, let alone a six figure VC job at a uni and actually saying something as embarrassing as “there are too many graduates”. Yep, too much education, that’s your problem right there, plebs getting degrees then being angry the economy is shite? Can’t have that!
Once again, the responsibility of government to manage the economy in order to maximise the opportunities for its citizens’ talents to produce greater wellbeing is denied in favour of accusations of “overeducation”…
