The world of electric vehicles is changing rapidly as increasingly the leaders are in developing countries

India, Mexico & Brazil now have a higher EV sales share than Japan

Indonesia’s EV sales share has reached 15% this year, overtaking the US

Those tree hugging hippies in Hungary now lead the world in the share of electricity generated from solar with almost 25% of their electricity coming from solar in 2024.

A remarkable leap from just 7% five years ago.

Good morning with good news: "Battery pack prices for stationary storage fell to $70/kWh in 2025, 45% lower than in 2024," reports BNEF.

45% down in 2025, after ~40% down in 2024!

Wow!

Cheap battery storage makes solar top global new generation tech!

New from me: How can China meet its 2030 emission commitments after falling badly off track? The country will have to very substantially overachieve its clean energy targets and limit plans for runaway expansion of coal power & petrochemical expansion in the next 5-yr plan.

Affordable all day solar is here.

Solar already produces affordable power during the day.

Rapid battery cost declines now mean that a solar + battery system that can move around 50% of its output to other parts of the day only costs $76/MWh

☀️ $43 solar
🔋 $33 storage

In Germany the only source of electricity that keeps growing and growing: renewable energy.

Solar and wind keep expanding and even though nuclear is no more coal generation has already shrunk significantly and keeps falling.

Average global battery *pack* price to $108/kWh, with China’s average at $84 (23% lower), while the US and the EU at paying 44% and 56%.

Stationary storage averages $70/kWh globally though, with China’s average of course lower - including some very large orders in the $60/kWh range.
The results from BloombergNEF's 2025 lithium-ion battery price survey are out. Lithium-ion battery pack prices dropped 8% from 2024 to a record low of $108 per kilowatt-hour. Pack prices are now 93% cheaper than they were in 2010.

Offshore wind has been making waves in the British power system for 25 years, growing to become 🇬🇧’s SECOND largest source of power

Starting with two small turbines in 2000, offshore wind has grown to generate nearly a fifth of British electricity.

Our recent analysis shows that heat pumps coupled with electro-thermal storage is the most cost-effective technology.

These numbers are just bonkers.

For reference, global electricity consumption is about 18-20 TW, total. So even when you factor in the capacity factor, 1.5 TW of new solar panels per year, every year, is so much that if you’d forecasted this a decade ago, everyone would’ve thought you barking mad.
Jesse Peltan:

"China's solar manufacturing capacity has been growing at ~0.3 TW yr⁻².

Manufacturing capacity now exceeds 1.5 TW yr⁻¹.

Installed solar capacity is ~1.2 TW.

Solar generation YTD is ~0.12 TWyr."
