My favorite thing about this eruption is that *one day* before it happened the state let a bunch of people go up to Spirit Lake to check their houses. Like can you imagine looking at volcano that had bulged out 300’ in the last month and being like “no prob gotta go get my shit”.

Tomorrow, we will talk about this photo.
A red Ford Pinto hatchback angles across a narrow gravel forest service road, a blue enduro motorcycle on a rear hitch carrier. Tall firs frame the view. Beyond them, a towering ash cloud from a pyroclastic density flow billows skyward. Photo by Richard Kent Lasher, May 18, 1980.

Ladies and gentlemen, we did it. SB 79 has been signed.

Incredible work by @cayimby.bsky.social @scottwiener.bsky.social and everyone who supported SB 79.

Now the real work begins - making sure it gets expanded, instead of chipped away at, in the future :)

America is not building enough housing and Americans are facing sky-high housing costs as a result.

Today, the Senate took a historic step to change that.

The ROAD to Housing Act will help communities – urban, suburban, and rural – build more housing and bring down costs.

It basically describes how faster depreciation after 1954 allowed investors to earn money back so quickly through tax benefits.

(Aside, I really wish they’d just automate alt text already, it would take a while to type that entire page of text out)

Low-Rise Speculative Apartment specifically looked at Oakland 1957-1963. I think there was a parking minimum change in there?

Reflections on last week's #WeekWithoutDriving in a city that still refuses to acknowledge the existence of its nondrivers — which a comprehensive new report claims make up one-third of LA's population
One-third of Angelenos do not drive
Walking back the "car-free" games promise is unconscionable in a city where the people who don't drive are also the most vulnerable users of our streets

In fact the depreciation tax benefits were so good their dingbats could be operated and rented at cost - the depreciation *was* the profit.
dingbattitude.bsky.social
Tbqh for me the biggest surprise from The Low-Rise Speculative Apartment was that accelerated depreciation was a huge factor in the construction of dingbats - because they were single lots and could be depreciated quickly it was a huge boon for people like doctors, lawyers, etc to build one.

I've already called him twice. Took 1 minute. There's probably nothing more important for CA than building more housing. SB79 is a modest way to do that. This is probably one of the top two or three things for the entire country given the ties between CA's success, population, and liberalism.

If you live in California, please call @gavinnewsom.bsky.social at (916) 445-2841 and urge him to sign SB 79. Here's my post about why the bill is so important: publiccomment.blog/p/newsom-s-f...

Incredibly if you miss this group of 3 trains spaced less than 10 minutes apart you’ll be waiting half an hour again.
dingbattitude.bsky.social
This train had an enormous gap in front of it- partly due to the fucked up door, surely- so it was packed, so now we’re going to really tempt fate by waiting for the next (empty) train at Chinatown.

Cursed myself by praising Metro yesterday so now I’m being sacrificed at the alter of out of service doors.

Currently waiting at Union Station for an A Line train and the previous one is already in Pasadena 🤡

Vancouver's TransLink is a rare success story in North American transit, with ridership almost matching pre-Covid levels. It might be the only big 🇺🇸/🇨🇦 agency that has *expanded* total bus service since 2019.

I spoke w/CEO Kevin Quinn about lessons from TransLink's rapid recovery. 🧵
The Secret to Vancouver’s Public Transit Ridership Recovery
The Canadian city’s transit agency, TransLink, bounced back from Covid even as other North American systems have struggled. Its leader explains why riders returned.
